Earth Lovers: Happy Happy Earth Week!

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

Happy Earth Week 2011!  I know you’re all obviously taking three-minute showers, but what else are you doing to celebrate?  Recycling more?  Turning down the AC?  Riding your bike instead of driving?  At Hopkins, we have a whole week of events and activities planned on and around campus. Lots of different student groups are working together to make students more aware or the environment and how they can help reduce their carbon and water footprint.

Not sure what your community or campus is planning for Earth Week?  Here are a few ideas to help get you started:

Every time you bring in your own tumbler or mug to Starbucks, they take 10 cents off, but bring one in on Earth Day (Friday, April 22) and get a FREE brewed coffee or tea (hot or iced—since it’s starting to warm up for spring)!

Volunteer at a National Park to experience nature and see why you should be so involved in helping the environment!

Stock up on The Body Shop’s biodegradable Earth Lover’s Shower Gels to “Start Your Day the Earth Lover’s Way”

Spice up your old recycling habit by making light decorations out of old aluminum cans and a magazine rack out of old magazines instead of just tossing them in the recycling bin

If you know that you’re going to be drinking water all day, use the same cup at home and keep refilling it to cut down on the amount of water you use to wash dishes.  Or you can try out these fun, edible cups to cut down on dish washing altogether!

Melanie Shimano (Johns Hopkins University, '13) is a Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering major originally from Orange County, California. She is currently involved in research at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and also spends her time with various on-campus groups including her sorority (Phi Mu!), Jaywalk Dance Team, and AIChE/SBE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers/Society for Biological Engineers). When she's not busy with school, some of her favorite things to do are shopping, hanging out with friends, and eating sprinkles cupcakes. And she definitely looks forward to going to the beach when she visits back home during breaks since it rains in Balitmore almost every day (but she still loves Hopkins).
