Zodiac Signs: Fact or Fiction?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Youngstown chapter.

Want to know your daily horoscope? You may want to start off with knowing where your horoscope comes from first. A horoscope is a prediction based on the movement of the stars, which falls under the study of astrology. However, astrology isn’t exactly a proven science since the stars don’t actually move, but rather the earth does. The study of astrology has been largely debated for many years and has been ruled to not be an actual science once Sir Isaac Newton came along in the late 17th century.

Many people still look at astrology and the movement of the celestial bodies to be quite factual and relevant. This is where zodiac signs come into play. The Ancient Greeks use astrology to create the 12 zodiac signs we have today, which include: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. These 12 star signs are broken down to specific time frames and then that calendar is used to determine daily horoscopes, explain personality traits, and much more.

In most recent discoveries, there is believed to be a 13th zodiac sign, which would change the time frames slightly. NASA backs up this claim and reports it to be a scientific finding. So, does this mean all the zodiac findings are incorrect? Not exactly. The difference of adding another zodiac sign would insignificantly change the dates of which the zodiac calendar falls under, leaving your daily horoscope to remain the same.

Today, there is an abundance of websites or apps that promise to predict your current horoscope or even determine your personality traits based on your zodiac sign. For example, an  Aries may come off as strong-headed and more determined, whereas a Taurus is more quiet and subtle. This is where scientists tend to argue that astrology has no factual foundation and is pretty much all fiction. They often state that one’s personality cannot possibly be based upon the celestial movement of the stars. But who knows for sure?

Zodiac signs have been around for centuries and many people have chosen to follow its meaning. When it comes down to deciding if zodiac signs are fact or fiction, the answer remains unknown. So, whether you chose to believe your daily horoscope, honestly is up to you!
