November: On-campus Events

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at York U chapter.

There’s almost always something going on at school. It is normal to get too swamped by classes and schoolwork in university that there is no time to go out and socialize. Extracurricular and on-campus activities can be an alternative since you don’t have to tack on extra hours for commute time in between class, activities, and going home (unless you’re going to Calumet or Winters).

One of the great things about York is that there is just a diverse selection of organizations on campus run by students as well as such a wide variety of event types.

Here are some of the more high-profile/heavily advertised events coming up throughout the rest of November.

There are two major event weeks coming up for events over the rest of November: First is the United South Asians Alliance’s first annual Resistance Week. A variety of events including panels and workshops will be taking place. The week begins with a free food service directed at the food insecurity issues that students face. South Asian-identified folks will be prioritized. The rest of the week will include events like a Liberation struggles panel with guests speakers open to everyone, and a women’s circle as well as a self-defense class for women-identified folks.

These week-long event weeks hosted by different organizations on campus tend to cater to a diverse selection of people. There is usually at least one event which will be a decent fit for your personality. For instance, YFS’ annual Mental Health Awareness Week will be taking place in the upcoming week and will include events like a coffee house and a crafts session.

Throughout November, the following events will/have taken/be taking place on Keele campus:

  • Nov. 14-17: USAY Resistance Week.
  • Nov. 15: Pizza Social & Money Talk.
  • Nov. 15: BLOC BY BLOC. OPIRG is hosting the launch of a brand-new revolutionary board game.
  • Nov. 21-24: YFS Mental Health Awareness Week.
  • Nov. 16: SUSA’s mentorship workshop. Participants do not have to be sociology students and can register to be a mentor or mentee:
  • Nov. 16: Trans day of remembrance. Black Women Bridging Borders will be hosting a vigil in Vari Hall for victims of anti-trans and anti-black violence.
  • Nov. 19: Lady Hacks. An event for females who enjoy working in teams and problem-solving. Volunteering is not exclusive to females.
  • Nov. 23: Reach Out’s Mental Health Matters. A workshop on mental health at a prime stress period during the school year.
  • Nov. 24: – epic‘s holiday movie night.

Hey! I'm Stephanie Wilcox, and I am a professional writing major here at York U! I spend most of my time playing piano or ukulele and crying over books and boybands. I'm currently studying Korean as an elective, and I hope to do plenty of travelling after I graduate. I believe in fighting for a better, safer, and more equal future, especially through words and writing. This is my third year at York University, and I am thrilled to begin writing with Her Campus this year as a CC and seeing the impact we will be making here!
