Name: Haley O’Halloran

Program/Year: 3rd year film production with a minor in English

Age: 20

Hometown: Oakville, Ontario (ew)

Guilty pleasure movie: I don’t like to feel guilty about watching a movie but it’s probably Catfish because of how many times I’ve watched it (even though it is a genuinely good documentary).

Favourite pizza toppings: Olives and green peppers!

What’s your role at Her Campus York U?

I’m an editor but I’ve written an article before and intend to write a couple more.

What do you love about your program?

I like that film is something that takes time to be good at/understand. English comes easily to me so I took it as a “fun” minor, but with film I like the creative and technical challenges of pre-production, production, and post-production. I also love the various aspects that are involved in film production, my main areas of study and passion being in cinematography, editing, and screenwriting, with a focus on documentary and fiction storylines. (Additionally, I’d like to encourage more women to go into film, especially cinematography!) And Manfred Becker is the sweetest editing teacher ever.

What are some challenges to being in your program?

Some of our professors aren’t great but I won’t get into that. It’s additionally difficult having to decide which streams you want to go into towards the end of 2nd year, since I’d like to be educated in all aspects of film. Also, to keep it short, men need to stay in their lane.

What do you love about York University?

I like how big the campus is to be honest, my walks to class are always nice. And my beautiful friends have made my university experience so much more enjoyable, especially since they are predominantly women in my program who make and work on amazing films. Also, the prominence of Socialist/Communist groups on campus have given me many opportunities to expand my education in regards to my political beliefs.

Where’s your favourite place to study?

I don’t really study because I’m a bad person. But if I am going to study, I’ll do it in bed right before I go to sleep and right when I wake up.

What do you like to do to wind down after a stressful day?

Watch a movie with my friends or lay in bed and loudly listen to Missy Elliott.
