The Evolution of Beyoncé: From Diapers to Diamonds

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at YCP chapter.

Everyone who is living in the modern world knows who Queen Bey aka Mrs. Carter aka Sasha Fierce aka Yoncé aka Slayer of My Life but how well do we know her story? *dun dun DUUUUNN*

Level One: We begin our tale with Auntie Bey’s beginnings: Born  September 4th, 1981 in Houston, Texas to Mathew and Tina Knowles; She was the first of two kids (we love you too Solange but it ain’t about you right now).

Level Two: Girl’s Tyme! Young Bey met future Destiny’s Child members LaTavia Roberson and Kelly Rowland to form the ‘Hip-Hop/Rapping’ girl group! There were six original members: Bey, Kelly, LaTavia, Nikki and Nina Taylor, and Tamar Davis. Beyonce was twelve at the time. #cutness4days

Level Three: Girls Tyme part II, but different! Mathew Knowles, Bey’s dad, stepped in to take the group to the next level. He kicked out Tamar and the Taylor sisters, then brought in LeToya Luckett. They went through some name confusion: Something Fresh, Cliche, The Dolls, and Destiny. They finally settled on Destiny’s Child in 1996.

Level Three: Yay! Destiny’s Child became of success! But it wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Mathew, being the jerk he is, he booted out LaTavia and LaToya, too. Enter in *drum roll* Michelle Williams! Destiny’s Child Part III, I guess? I can’t even keep track.

Level Four: The ball drops – In 2005, Destiny’s Child officially announces their breakup during a concert in Barcelona – which is slightly sketchy if you ask me because Dangerously in Love debuted in 2003. Either way, the girl group was dead. *sobs*

Level Five: Don’t be too sad! Beyonce got on the up and up faster than you can say “Mathew Knowles has a control issue.” She went from Dangerously in Love to Speak My Mind to B’Day to….well, let’s just say she kept slaying the album game.

Level Six: Let’s skip to the good stuff! IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, BEYONCE DROPPED AN ALBUM ON US WITHOUT ANY WARNING! BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE: SHE HAD SECRETLY MADE VIDEOS FOR ALL. OF. THE. SONGS. BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE: THE ALBUM WAS ALL ABOUT HER SEXY TIME WITH HER HUSBAND – JAY-Z (Oh yeah, Side note: Jay-Z is her husband, but he’s not important and you’ll find out why later.)

Level Seven: BEYONCE SHREDS EVERYONE’S LIFE WITH LEMONADE! I know, some people say it was a gimmick but that’s obviously bullcrap. Here’s what’s the best about this level: Beyonce has finally become free. Her entire career has bee keeping her private life private and we love that, but Lemonade was her release. She was unapologetically black, unapologetically human, and unapologetically Beyonce. Thank you for sharing yourself, Auntie.
