Freshmen Fashion with Hazen Mayo ’19

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Yale chapter.

This year’s freshman class is a brainy, brawny, and, not to forget, beautiful bunch! Hailing from all across the country, and across the world, this new crop of Yale students certainly does not lack uniqueness, especially when it comes to fashion. Yesterday, under the enveloping shade of Maison Mathis, raspberry macaroon in hand, one of these chic individuals opened up about her style, and how it came to be.

Josephine Mayo, a Minnesota native more often referred to as Hazen, her middle name, explained her relationship to fashion. “I’ve had lots of fashionable women in my life,” she pointed out; first and foremost: her grandmother. A first generation immigrant from Sri Lanka, Hazen’s grandmother always took pride in her appearance, donning beautiful saris and gold jewelry. “I admired her growing up,” Hazen revealed, her eyes widening. “I admire the work she puts into how she looks.” Yet, Hazen’s grandmother is not the only reason that she puts effort into her style. “You dress well, you feel well,” she stated. Lifting her hands into the air, Hazen exclaimed, “You can feel so empowered by just the couple inches that heels give you.”

What is Hazen’s signature style? “I like formfitting clothing,” she admitted, such as pencil skirts that accentuate one’s waist. She also loves heels, a hard type of shoe to pull off here in cobblestoned New Haven. “There are no cobblestones in Minnesota!” Hazen reasoned. “I tried to wear stilettos to Convocation. It did not go over well.” While her style is always naturally evolving, Hazen’s favorite season remains the same. “I love the transition between summer and fall,” she said, smiling. Her go-to outfit? Layers. She loves this time of year because she can layer and still wear dresses and skirts. “But no tights,” she insisted. “I hate tights. They’re so uncomfortable.”

So where does one shop to achieve Hazen’s seemingly effortless, always put-together style? Her staple stores are as follows: Urban Outfitters, JCrew, and Anthropologie. “But I have clothes from all over,” she added.

Hazen then participated in a little game.

Heels or sneakers? Heels.

Pants or skirts? Skirts.

Winter or summer? Summer.

Cross-body or hobo? Cross-body.

Jumpsuit or romper? Jumpsuit.

Lipstick or lipgloss? Lipstick.

Thanks for chatting with HerCampus Yale, Hazen! Keep up that style!
