Why Christmas Music Needs to wait ‘Till December 1st

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

Let me paint the scene for you. Its November 1st. I’ve just come back from class and all I want to do is take a nap. I open the door to my apartment and hear Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas” blasting in my common room. What is wrong with this picture you ask? The fact that Christmas music is playing.

I’m aware that I have the unpopular opinion of not wanting to listen to Christmas music all the time. However, Christmas music shouldn’t be played all the time. Its only meant to be played during a specific part of the year: Christmas. November 1st is not Christmas time, in fact you are skipping over a very important holiday called Thanksgiving. If you hate Thanksgiving I can understand that the Pilgrims were not nice people but I like Thanksgiving for the food, family, parade, and the fact that school is closed. Thanksgiving is not Christmas time it’s Thanksgiving time and I shouldn’t have to listen to Christmas music before then, it’s not the season.

Two whole months is too long to be listening to Christmas music every day. I believe that you should savor the season and cut out November being “technically” Christmas time. It’s not the season and it shouldn’t be considered the season. Wait until at least December 1st. That’s also not really the season but I can let it slide when it starts then. And know just because I don’t want you to play Christmas music as soon as Halloween ends doesn’t make me a Grinch. It just makes me a person who thinks that it has a time and place and that time is December 1st at 12 AM.
