What I learned About Shaving My Head: 1 Year Hair Update

I’ve been posting my journey of hair growth since I shaved it off a little over a year ago. I wrote about what I learned by being bald, and what living with six months of hair was like (it was awkward). Now I’ve hit the one-year mark and so many new things are happening with my hair that I haven’t experienced in so long.

Ponytail? Ponytail???

Before I shaved it off, I kept it short anyways. I’ve been cutting my hair since 7th grade and for the very first time a couple of weeks ago, I was able to put my hair into a real, genuine, ponytail. There are still wisps of hair that fall out and make me look like I just ran a mile at the gym, but being able to get hair off my neck is new and thrilling.

Haircuts

I also got my first haircut since I shaved! Don’t tell my stylist back home, she would feel betrayed, but I got a trim to try and even out the different size growth layers. Gone are the days of taking an electric razor and quickly buzzing it all off, back are the days of sitting in the chair and watching someone clip my ends.

Beauty Supply Shopping

I haven’t owned a hairbrush for a few years. Even before being bald, my hair was short enough to always style itself into a fashionable cow lick when rolling out of bed each morning. I didn’t own hair bands unless I was tying up a big shirt, and I didn’t need bobby pins to keep anything back. Now all of a sudden I’m finding myself purchasing items I haven’t paid any mind too in the past. I’ve even started the tradition of losing bands and clips (I even lost a band on the first day I opened the package).

Shedding

What on Earth? I feel like a dog, or a long haired cat. I don’t remember ever shedding this much. Brush my hair: Shedding. Put up in a ponytail: Shedding. What’s touching my shoulder? Another strand of loose hair. Towels, shirts, pillows, how do people exist with crazy long hair?
