October comes at such an amazing time in the semester, but sometimes it can feel a little tedious just waiting around for Halloween night. Why wait until the last day of October to embrace the autumn season? With our top five things to do in the Cincinnati area this October, from pumpkin picking to haunted house screaming, there is no way you you’ll be bored this month.

October isn’t complete without a Jack-O-Lantern or two! Burwinkle Farms may be a 30 minute drive, but, we promise you, it’s worth it. Just because you’re in college doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the fun of going to a pumpkin patch and choosing the best one to bring home. You can do all of those things at Burwinkle, with the added bonus of a corn maze, hayrides, and a photo station where you can take your next fall-inspired Instagram.

If you’d rather have an adventure on your weekends, get a group of friends to head out to King’s Island for their Halloween Haunt. During every weekend in October, they have haunted houses and designated zones with all sorts of characters (zombies, witches, ghosts, oh my!) that are waiting to jump out and scare you. And while you’re there, there’s enough roller coasters, thrill rides, and live entertainment to keep you busy throughout the night.

Think you’ve got what it takes to face one of the scariest haunted house attractions in America? See the gruesome, the bloody, and the terrifying all in one place as you make your way through The Dent Schoolhouse Haunted House. The real public school, built in 1894, is said to be haunted by the souls of “disruptive” children that were “taken care of” by the head of the janitorial staff Charlie. But it’s more than just an urban legend; those children actually disappeared, and their remains were found hung in the janitor’s basement… and Charlie was never found. It sounds absolutely terrifying, collegiettes, so bring a big group of friends that can protect you from the Janitor!

Maybe you don’t want to terrify yourself in front of your crush, so suggest date night this month to be at Findlay Market for their Fall Food Festival on Sunday, October 12th from noon to 4pm. Just in Over-the-Rhine, Findlay Market will have live music and food demos to teach you everything you need to know about fall cooking. Enjoy some Craft Cocktails or the Biergarten and grab a late lunch at any of the amazing food stands in Findlay.

And if Trick-Or-Treating isn’t your thing, Washington Park is hosting a free showing of Dracula and Frankenstein on October 31. Dress up in costume, grab a date and a picnic basket full of treats, and enjoy two of the most loved classic horror films. (If you don’t want to give up your Halloween night, check out their other Halloween-themed movie nights that are happening every weekend in October!)
