For most people, their RA is just another person who you see walking around on your floor. You might even ask them a question or two if you need help with a situation. Most people take their RA’s for granted and don’t realize how much they do for their residents. They don’t make the effort to get to know them. Here are some reasons why it would be worth your time to get to know, and love your RA.

       1. They’re always there for you.

Last year in my residence hall, during the beginning of the first semester, there were some issues I was dealing with. I went to my RA and talked to her; she was supper supportive and worked with me to help solve my problems. No matter how small or big, even when she was busy or in a rush, she always listened. I know it’s the RA’s job to help the residents with emotional support when they need them, but I could tell that my RA genuinely cared about my problems.

       2. They Have free candy in their room.

One of my favorite things about my RA this year, is the fact she always has some sort of candy in her room. This can be used as motivation to go and get to know your RA and get some free candy out of it! Who doesn’t want free candy?!

        3. They take time out of their days to plan activities.

RA’s are constantly thinking about and planning things to do for their residents. They put in so much effort to plan something that the residents will find entertaining. Most of the time, residents don’t go to the activity but they really should. It’s a good way to get to know your RA and the people who live by you.

        4. They’re a pleasure to talk to.

Even though we’ve only been back to school for 3 weeks, I already love my RA this year. She is a sweetheart and is one of the nicest people I know; she is a pleasure to talk to. At times, I will spend hours in her room talking to her about almost everything from my classes, to my crush, to events we can do, to how to study better and about life in general. My RA makes my resident hall even better!

        5. They’re students like you.

Most people forget that RAs are also students on campus. They’ve been through the same situation(s) you have, therefore, they can give you advice on how to deal with it. My RA, fortunately, is a Psychology major like me. I have talked to her about classes and teachers and has given me some great advice. RA’s can be a great source of information, so talk to them as much as you can!

Thank you Xavier RAs, we love you!
