An Open Letter to My Mom

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

Dear Mom,

You are the most influential person that has ever been a part of my life, and that is never going to change. You were the first person to show me what love is. You were the first person to hold my hand and hug me close when I got scared. You were the first person to push me to try new things, even when I was not quite sure about it. You were the first person to explain to me what the difference between right and wrong was and how important it is to do the right thing. You were the person who taught me all of these vital lessons and more, and without you, I would not be where I am today.

There are so many things that I wanted to thank you for before we said our final goodbye. I wanted to thank you for all the times that you got after me for my messy room, because now I always make sure that it is clean. I wanted to thank you for all the times you would wake up early to take me, either to morning practice or just because I missed the bus. I wanted to thank you for teaching me how to cook, because if you didn’t I would have a strict diet of ramen noodles. I wanted to thank you for instilling every moral and value that I have in me, because they have helped me with my everyday decisions. There are so many things that I wanted to thank you for in person, because you always worked so hard to take the time to teach me all of these virtues.

Our last goodbye was not supposed to be our last. There were so many things that we will not get to experience together, and there were so many things that were left unsaid. You will not be there with me when I watch my little sisters graduate high school, and you will not be there when I graduate college. However, that does not change the amount of love I have for you, or the fact that you love me. I know that you will be there in spirit along with us, and that helps just knowing that. I hold you dear to my heart and think of you each and every day. I will love you forever and always Mom.

Love,

Your Oldest Daughter

Dedicated to my late mother, Donna.
