An Open Letter about Fad Diets

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

We’ve heard it time and time again. New year, new you. We are bombarded with colorful juice cleanses and power workouts guaranteed to help you drop pounds and gain that perfect beach body.

Enough is enough.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve been intrigued by the all natural diets to rid your body of toxins and promise to help you feel rejuvenated, who wouldn’t? But where do we draw the line between healthy and too far?

Coming to college, everyone warns you of the “Freshmen 15”, but some of our best memories are made over late night UDF runs for milkshakes the size of our faces. I would never want to trade those moments laughing until our food babies ache.

Life is about balance. We can’t have pizza for every meal, but we can’t only eat salad either. Some days we work out, and on others, we are too busy keeping our heads above piles of homework to even think about going to the gym. Some days we eat our fruits and veggies, and others we have cookie dough for dinner. That is what’s great about life!

Yes, it is important for your body to get your key nutrients, so don’t skip out on the fruits and veggies our parents always made us eat. But don’t forget the food that is good for your soul too.

So you do you Xavier. Find your balance and own it.
