Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is the Missing Piece of Your TV Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

The CW Network’s highly irreverent but ridiculously funny series, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, just ended its second season. If you aren’t already watching this romantic comedy show, then you need to fix that right now. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is the creation of comedian Rachel Bloom, who also stars in and writes music for the show. In their first season, Rachel Bloom deservingly won a Golden Globe for her performance as Rebecca Bunch.

The basic premise is that Rebecca Bunch quits her job in New York and moves to California to find happiness– and she may or may not be moving to follow her ex-boyfriend from summer camp, Josh Chan (Vincent Rodriguez III). We here at HCXU already know how great the show is, but you may not. So here are some reasons that you should start watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Rebecca Bunch is way too relatable.

Rachel Bloom as Rebecca Bunch makes the best female protagonist because her bizarre life is somehow super relatable. Whether it’s at work or laying around at home, Rebecca’s laziness, love of food, and overall craziness sometimes just makes you think “ME!”

It’s a musical!

Music means that there’s some awesome choreography coupled with hilarious lyrics lyrics. No matter how strange or familiar the situation, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has a perfectly-themed song illustrate it. As an added bonus, every song is available on Spotify!

It’s a RomCom!

If you are a fan of romantic comedies, then you HAVE to check this show out. The story follows Rebecca’s love life when she moves to a new city, so love and heartbreak take center stage in the show. Also, like in every romantic comedy, Rebecca’s love life is one messy and entertaining love triangle. She even sings a song about it!

Paula makes the best side-kick.

Rebecca’s new best friend, Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin), makes the best side-kick for Rebecca’s antics. She’s one of the best supporting characters and comedic elements of the show. You’ll be wishing that you could add Paula to your friend group.

Rebecca’s Neighbor, Heather, is super bad-ass.

Oftentimes, Heather (Vella Lovell) is only voice of reason for Rebecca’s life (though Rebecca rarely listens to her). What’s so funny about her character is that she is the most logical while being one of the most seemingly strange characters.

Rebecca’s work life is as crazy as her love life.

The crazy situations at Rebecca’s office are as absurd and humorous as her dysfunctional love life. Her dopey boss, Darryl (Pete Gardner), will easily become one of your favorite characters.

Oh, and the residents of West Covina, California are ridiculously funny, too.

Father Brah. Karen. Mrs. Hernandez. The Chans. They all add so much hilarity to the storylines.

There are so many reasons that you should be watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, so what are you waiting for? The first two seasons of the show are available to binge on Netflix. Season three will premiere in the fall!
