Classes Every Xavier Business Student Should Take

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

Xavier’s Williams College of Business offers so many different classes, sometimes picking some to register for can be overwhelming. Here are some recommendations of which business classes are the best or most beneficial, in the words of current Xavier students.

Accounting 200

“My favorite business class was Accounting 200 with Cam Cockrell. Cam made the classroom a fun and welcoming environment and showed that he truly cared about each individual student. As a first semester freshman, this class gave me the opportunity to meet other students in my major and within the business school.” – Ellie Esser

Brand Building

“I would say that my favorite class was Brand Building with Professor Kuremsky because it had a lot to do with taking what we learned in our previous classes and implementing them in real life projects that are reviewed/advised by professionals in the real world. It really is a course that prepares those who want to enter the branding side of marketing in an efficient and fun manner” –Dom Villereal

“My favorite business class was Brand Building with Michael Kuremsky. He gave us real-world knowledge from his experience in the industry, and allowed us to apply it to group projects. It was the most hands-on experience class I have ever taken, and I am confident that the information I learned will be applicable in any future job.” –Nicole Armour

“My favorite business class was definitely Brand Building with Professor K. Everything we did in that class felt like real-world experience. We created brands, we worked with the digital design students to make those brands come to life, and we pitched those brands to actual business professionals from the Cincinnati area. It was a ton of fun and I still bring up that project in interviews!” –Nikki Leaders

Business Analytics

“Although I didn’t exactly excel in this class (it’s for my minor and I’m not the best at it), I love Dr. Laker and her business analytics class is very beneficial because I know that the skills I learned in that class will translate into any job I have in the future” –Brian Berry

Category Management

“I would say my favorite class at Xavier so far is category management with Scott Beck. I thought it was the most beneficial due to how much we learned and related it back to the real world and what happens outside of the classroom in marketing. It was also about beer; therefore, it was very easy for college kids to relate to. I was able to take what I learned in his class to my interview for an internship and I am still using terms and previous knowledge on a day to day basis at my internship. It was, by far, the best business class I have taken, and Scott makes class enjoyable and fun for all the students.” –Kate Rottkamp

Consumer Behavior

“I loved Kate Loveland’s Consumer Behavior course. We talked about the science of shopping and the tendencies every consumer has, especially those they are not aware of. My group then conducted a study on how Venmo is changing the purchasing landscape, similar to how credit cards did years ago.” –Rachel McFadden

“Consumer Behavior with Kate Loveland, because she just makes the classes I’ve had with her interesting. She always tells funny stories that keep my attention, and I always look forward to her class.” –Tasha Young

Data Mining

“I think in terms of learning the most, it would be my Data Mining class with Dr. Lauren Laker. The class was very challenging, but Dr. Laker taught in a way that gave you, as the student, the desire to succeed while providing the essential fundamentals to apply the concepts in a professional career.” –Mary Fanning

Finance 300

“I think it was good because it gives every student a strong foundation on basic financial elements that can prove to be important when you start investing your own money when you’re older.”-Dom Shaheen

International Finance

“I loved my International Finance class with Tim Kruse! I think the best part about the class was how applicable the content was to what is happening in our global economy, and helped me further understand the economic climate of our country. He really motivated me to dive deeper into our course through his passion for culture, current events, and the history behind each country we studied. I would recommend the class to anyone” –Maggie Morse

Negotiation

“Negotiation with Zachary Russell. The things we learn in this class will happen in the real world. We do everything from negotiating salaries to car deals to roommate issue it’s a really fun class and I would recommend people to take it”-Brianna Boyce

Professional Selling

“The business class I liked the best is the first Professional Selling class with Karen Eutsler. I enjoyed Karen’s class so much because I felt like I was able to apply the concepts we were learning to real-life situations, and I felt like I was more comfortable with selling after taking her class.” –Sarah O’Shaunnasy

Social Media Marketing

“In Social Media Marketing, taught by Matt Dooley, I learned so much about how important social media is to marketers and businesses today, and how significant of an influence it has on consumers. Professor Dooley owns his own media company, so he really knew what he was talking about, and had a ton of real-world examples to give to us. We also got to work closely with local businesses for our semester-long projects, and present our recommendations to them, which was an awesome experience.” –Lauren Gierla
