Campus Celeb: Claire Pickus and Serengetee

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

Feel like you’re going through college, unsure of what do to when you finish, but know you want to change the world in your own way? Meet Jeff, Ryan, and their friends who started Serengetee in 2012 and accomplished exactly that. After studying abroad and experiencing different cultures, they started their own clothing company with the mission to “connect people to the globe through fabric while giving back to the communities that inspire our products.” They’ve won and been nominated for numerous accolades including being the 2013 Innovative Start-Up Winner.

How does it all work?

Step 1, choose a fabric:

Serengetee has many different fabrics supporting all sorts of different causes. Choose the one that you like the best or means the most to you!

Step 2, choose a product:

Use that fabric and order a t-shirt, hat, book bag, headband… the options are endless!

Step 3, show it off!:

Wear it anywhere and everywhere. Be sure to take your picture in your fabric and share it with the company!

According to their website, they have touched 32 countries, have 301,567 supporters, and have donated over $100,000 to over 36 different causes (which you can choose to support when picking your fabric!). Serengetee might be letting you “wear the world,” but they’re also making it easy to give back to the world.

We chatted with junior and campus rep for Serengetee Claire Pickus, our campus celebrity, about her involvement with the organization and her experiences as a representative for a company.

Name: Claire Pickus

Year & Graduation Class: Junior, Class of 2016. OT Class of 2017

Majors/Minors: Occupational Therapy with a Spanish minor

Hometown: Wichita, Kansas

Fun fact: I lived abroad with my family for a year when I was 4.

Describe Serengetee with four adjectives.

Unique, Empowering, Creative, and Worldly

How did you become involved with Serengetee?

My good friend from summer camp was a rep at her school in Colorado in the fall. She showed me the clothes she had bought, told me about the company, and encouraged me to apply!

What are your duties as a Serengetee campus rep? What are some things you have learned from being a campus rep for an organization?

Mostly promoting Serengetee on our campus. We share the posts Serengetee makes on social media and participate in contests with other Rep regions. I have learned how to make a spiel about Serengetee in a short but effective way. I have also learned a lot about how much of an impact social media can have in promoting a company.

What do you like most about the organization?

I love how diverse the products are and that the buyer gets to design what they want by choosing the fabric of the cause they want to support, and placing it on the product they wish to buy. I also love how they help causes all over the world, because worldwide travel is something that is very important to me.

What’s your favorite product that you’ve gotten?

I love my baseball tee. It was my first Serengetee purchase! It’s long sleeve but very light and the fabric is floral so it’s perfect for spring.

How can we get more involved with Serengetee?

I encourage everyone to check out the website as well as follow them on any form of social media. They post inspiring things about the causes they support as well as what deals they have going on.

I encourage you to go ahead and pick out a product you like because they support great causes, and are fun products to wear. Once you buy one, you’ll love seeing other people wearing their Serengetee products, wherever you go.

Everyone is also welcome to email me at pickusc@xavier.edu for 15% off coupon codes if interested in buying something.
