America’s Best Idea

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

We have an idea…and it’s America’s best one. You should visit America’s National Parks.

Since it was established in 1916, the National Park Service, a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior, has been preserving and protecting America’s landscapes for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of present and future generations. Because of this valuable service, the parks have engaged people from across the U.S. and around the globe with important aspects of American natural history and national identity. Take it from the 275 million visitors that the NPS welcomes each year, national parks are one of America’s treasures!

Maybe you already think that you know everything there is to know about National Parks, but here are some surprising statistics about the NPS: The NPS celebrated its 100th birthday last year. There are 417 National Parks covering more than 84 million acres of land. The NPS employs more than 22,000 workers who share a love for America’s natural resources, along with 440,000 volunteers who donate 7.9 million hours of work annually. In 2015, 307 million people visited National Parks, and 660,000 children participated in the Junior Ranger program. 100 years later, the Park System is still going strong!

National Parks are in every state and encompass every natural landscape from Yosemite to the Everglades. They also preserve American history from the National Mall to Alcatraz Island. Whether you’re a history buff, a tree-hugger, or somewhere in between, the NPS has a park for you. 126 National Parks charge entrance fees, which range from $10 to $30, and these fees go toward continual park preservation and education programs. Children under 16 years are admitted for free! And annual passes are available, if you’re an energetic supporter of the Park System.

Now more than ever it is imperative that Americans support and visit National Parks. The NPS helps to protect vital ecosystems, endangered species, and America’s natural beauty. The next time you’re planning a vacay with the fam, or a road trip with some friends, consider taking your wanderlust to one of America’s beautiful National Parks.
