The 6 Stages of Celebrating St. Paddy’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

St. Patrick’s Day: a college student’s dream. This holiday celebrating St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, has a rich history that celebrates the Irish people and their background… and lots of green beer. Whether you’re just wearing green to show your Irish pride or your looking for an all-day drinking marathon (the luck of the Irish to you for that one), look out for lucky leprechauns, drink responsibly, and have fun this St. Paddy’s Day!

Stage 1: Wake up – it’s time for kegs and eggs.

It may be 5am and you may have only gotten a couple hours of sleep, but even that won’t stop you from waking up early for once and donning your green. Bonus points if you have a kilt to wear! No kegs and eggs to start your morning? A hearty bowl of Lucky Charms always does the trick.

Stage 2: Top o’ the mornin’ to ya!

It’s mid-morning and the rest of the world has awoken to your St. Paddy’s festivities. Your Snapchat story is already bustling with the morning’s fun, and you’ve probably started incorporating an impersonation of an Irish brogue into your everyday speech.

Stage 3: I’ll have a pint of the black stuff.

Lunchtime. Hopefully you’re incorporating some traditional foods into your celebration like corned beef and cabbage, even though it takes a bit of work. But our bet is that by this point you’ve headed to the closest Irish pub and let them do all the work while you kick back with a Guinness. We don’t blame you.

Stage 4: “Kiss Me, I’m Irish!”

You’ve gotten some food in ya, and you’ve made it to the pub. Maybe today you catch the eye of another Irishman or woman proudly wearing a “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” pin. Who knows – this could be the start of something great… and we’ve always had a special love of redheads.

Stage 5: Green beer, Irish dancing, bagpipes – oh my!

Between bar hopping to between your favorite spots, heading downtown for a parade, or catching some of your friends curl their hair and move their feet impossibly fast, you’ve had a big day. Learn a few steps and try it out for yourself; it’s harder than it looks but we’re sure the green beer will help.

Stage 6: Absolutely knackered.

It’s the wee hours of the morning after, and you’ve made it. Despite exhaustion, you’ve managed to crowd everything into a short 24 hours. Whether you found a lucky shamrock or not, we’re sure you had a great day with lots of good luck to come!
