KUGS: A Music Nerd’s Way to Getting Involved

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WWU chapter.

Unknown to many students, Western has its own personal student run radio station that has been in place since 1974. For decades students have had the opportunity to volunteer, work, and get amazing radio on-air experience. The WWU student run station, or 89.3 KUGS FM Bellingham was the second radio station in the nation to webcast their radio shows online, and continues to be an extremely high quality and popular station that many locals turn to as their primary radio station channel.

Now that Winter Quarter has arrived KUGS is on-air 24/7, with student volunteers coming in every two hours to do their shows, even some broadcasting as late as 2:00am to 4:00am. All of the playlists are put together by the student DJs overseen by the Program Manager, Jamie Hoover, and the KUGS Program Director, sophomore Jordan Van Hoozer (interview with Jordan: http://www.hercampus.com/school/wwu/jordan-van-hoozer-kugs-radio-station-sensation).

KUGS also has a news hour with many different student news broadcasters, overseen by the KUGS News and Public Affairs Director, Briana Dearing.

KUGS is an extremely well put together organization at WWU with many opportunities for students to get involved while also gaining experience in radio and music. It’s really easy for anyone interested to get involved at the station, with a volunteer sign up sheet posted in the station (located in the upper level of the Viking Union) at the beginning of every quarter. If you want to learn the ins and outs of radio then I suggest you give it a shot!
