Why I’ve Decided to Travel to Costa Rica

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Why do we make the decisions we do? It’s always useful to reflect on them. I think that when we take the time to reflect, we get more out of the experience. Pretty soon, I will have the opportunity to travel outside of the United States. Here are some of the reasons I came up with as to why I decided to go on this adventure:

1. I was initially inspired to travel to Latin America when I took courses such as Latin American Social Movements and Modern Latin America. I remember my professor told us, “If you go anywhere in L.A, you should go to Costa Rica.”

2. I’ve never traveled outside of the United States before, and I thought going with my college in a group was the perfect way for my first time.

3. I receive credits toward my major. Also, two of my favorite sociology professors will be the group leaders on the trip.

4. The chance to apply what I’ve learned as a sociology major outside of the classroom. Sociologists study poverty, and even though Costa Rica is a very popular tourist destination, in 2015, it was reported that more than 1.1 million Costa Ricans lived in poverty.

5. To see the beautiful biodiversity of the region: I can’t wait to see all of the different plants and animals.

6. To push myself outside of my comfort zone: going to another country and experiencing a different culture will not only challenge me but make me more aware of the world around me.

7. It’s going to be an exciting adventure! We get to see the Poas Volcano, hike to La Fortuna Waterfall, zip-line and go on an aerial tram ride through Monteverde, visit a coffee plantation, go on a Crocodile River Tour, relax at the beach, and browse the colorful crafts center in Sarchi, San Jose.

What more could you possibly ask for from a trip?

I enjoy writing for Her Campus, studying Sociology, cooking, and listening to music. I have an appreciation for learning about the world we live in and how to make it a better place for everyone.  I hope you enjoy my articles!
Just a small town girl living in an even smaller college town. I'm an Accounting major at WVWC in hopes of someday going to law school. I enjoy coffee, jumping in puddles, & petting the locals' dogs when they take them for walks on campus.
