As Americans, we recall the tragedy of September 11, 2001 in different ways—all heart wrenching nonetheless. The four hijacked planes crashed into a Pennsylvanian field, the Pentagon, and the Twin Towers. Approximately 3,000 people died in these attacks. Not all of the victims were Americans.
However, effects of this tragedy do not hold true to everyone. On Halloween this year, two British teenagers set out to make a statement and win “Best Costume” at a party, and they did, without a doubt. The two teenagers dressed up as the Twin Towers; one tagged as the South Tower and the other, North Tower, during the terrorists attacks of 9/11. Their costumes included props such as planes, fire and explosions, and they even featured people dangling from their mid-sections to resemble those who jumped from their offices soon before the towers collapsed. Also accompanying their costumes was the American flag, worn as some type of head decoration. The girls, both 19-year-old students, are from Chester, England, where they study biology and criminology. Ironically enough, one of the girls is a daughter of a retired pilot.
The actions displayed by these two teenagers have caused an uproar. Many newspapers and tabloids have covered this story and described it as “shameful.” The girls won “Best Dressed” at their nightclub Halloween party, and they said their outfits were “not intended as a joke.” Still, actions speak louder than words. This story has been shared on social media and even has WVWC students talking.
