Take a Knee

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

They say this great nation is one under God,

A sentiment of freedom and liberty,

But this narrative is a deceitful fraud.

For not ‘all’ are free.

Blacks are perceived as equals,

The same as you and me,

But unfortunately, this movement is another devastating sequel,

For the cycle of injustice continues, you’ll see.

They called MLK a radical,

And Malcolm X a brute,

Because their opposition was “irrational”

But Whites were blinded by privilege and Blacks remained astute.

Blacks are perceived as equals,

The same as you and me,

But unfortunately, this movement is another devastating sequel,

For the cycle of injustice continues, you’ll see.

They said Kaepernick was seeking attention,

And honored Villaneuva a hero,

For freedom of speech is expressed in the First Amendment,

But for Blacks, taking a knee is a fatal blow.

Blacks are perceived as equals,

The same as you and me,

But unfortunately, this movement is another devastating sequel,

For the cycle of injustice continues, you’ll see.

Today, taking a knee is a sign of disrespect,

A dishonorable display of patriotism,

But what the privileged often neglect,

Is that police brutality and systemic oppression is in fact, racism.

Blacks are perceived as equals,

The same as you and me,

But unfortunately, this movement is another devastating sequel,

For the cycle of injustice continues, you’ll see.
