Six Ways To Beat Cabin Fever

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

I am pleased to announce that I have made it back to campus and haven’t missed a class (that wasn’t cancelled). I’m no longer snowed in, and the roads look a little better, but it doesn’t change the fact that it is absolutely COLD out there. No matter if you’re wearing a long-sleeve shirt or wool sweater, a coat or a parka, Sperry’s (does anyone still wear those? I do.) or snow boots, there is still a feeling in the air that burns through all of your layers down to the core of your bones. That feeling of COLD. Because it is so cold outside, there might as well be ten feet of snow on the ground because, if you don’t have to be out in the negative temperatures, Lord knows you aren’t getting out at all! I’m definitely like that. Anyone else?

Now that we’re tip-toeing the line of cabin fever from this everlasting cold and staying inside, what in the world can we do when we’re sick of Thomas Cahill talking about How the Irish Saved Civilization, balancing chemical equations, doing five hours’ worth of calculus, or deciding the publics for the childcare market? Here are a few ideas to prevent cabin fever when the weather outside sure is frightful!

Netflix Most college students know that Netflix is the best way to put off doing what you really should be doing. If that involves leaving the comforts of your warm residence hall, maybe you could wait a couple days for the weather to get a little warmer. A Netflix party, with yourself or with friends, is the perfect opportunity to lounge around in your pajamas and stay warm with a warm drink! Go back and watch the beginning of Pretty Little Liars and see if you can find clues that lead up to who A has been revealed to be, watch some Indie movies, watch High School Musical and try to do all the dances (it’s more fun with friends, and it will generate some body heat!).

Attend a Hall Program Your Resident Assistants in your residence halls create programs (hopefully, and probably, inside for this time of year) to help you have some fun on campus. It’s not all serious studying all the time! Check around your floor and building for advertisements for upcoming programs and then take a couple friends and go! Oftentimes, these programs are more fun than you may think, and there usually is free food! What can go wrong there?

Exercise What?! How can you exercise and not be in a gym? If you’re a purist, fine. Bundle up in ten layers and walk yourself across campus to the gym. That’s your prerogative. However, if you want to stay in and still work on your fitness to get Spring Break ready, check out Youtube for some workouts to do in your room until you can get outside again!

Read for Enjoyment I am endorsing that you set aside your class reading for a bit. Now, go grab a magazine or a book you’ve been looking to read for enjoyment, or click on it (whatever system you use to read). Reading for enjoyment can transport you from this terrible boredom-borderline-cabin-fever you’ve got going on for a little bit. I am not responsible for your personal decision not to work on homework and then show up for class unprepared. That’s all you.

Pinterest Ah, yes. Pinterest. Do I need to say anymore? The best time-killer for us collegiettes. I would argue it’s a better time killer than Netflix, but that’s just me.
