RLCG: How to Handle Roommate Issues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Long classes, short breaks, cold showers and small beds are all annoying things about college, but there’s one more that almost everyone struggles with or some point or another: an annoying roommate. But don’t let a roommate stop you from enjoying your living space; I have some tips that will help you handle even the worst of roommate struggles!

“How do I deal with my severely inconsiderate roommate?”

Sincerely, Don’t Know What to Do

Dear Don’t Know What to Do,

First of all, I’m sorry that you’re having issues with your roommate. We’ve all been there. The most obvious thing you could try would be to talk to them. I understand that sometimes you don’t want to have that confrontation, but if you never talk to them they may never understand that there is an issue. Bottling up emotions and issues is never the way to go when it comes to dealing with other people, especially those you live with.

The wrong thing to do is shoot your roommate a text about the issues. One reason that’s not the best idea is because she doesn’t have to reply. An even bigger problem is that she may not take you seriously if you don’t even have the nerve to talk to her face-to-face. Don’t post about your roommate on social media because it will most likely get back to them and intensify the issues you’re having already.

If you’re living with a person, it’s just as much your right to be comfortable in the space as it is theirs. Never feel like your feelings aren’t important enough to raise the fact that there is an issue to your roommate. I hope that you will find the nerve to talk to her and get things straightened out. If things don’t work out, you can always switch rooms; never let one person ruin your college experience!

Best of luck with your roommates! Be sure to follow me on Twitter to get personalized advice from and the chance to be featured in my next article!

Until next time, collegiettes!
