Reaching Your Goals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Have you ever thought your goals were too outrageous, silly, or unachievable? If so, think again.

No goal is ever unreachable, whether it be a career goal or a fitness goal. We have all heard the old saying, “nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it,” and there is a lot of truth behind that statement. There have been many people in history who have proven that—one most recently being Diana Nyad.

On August 31, Nyad accomplished her lifetime goal—to swim from Cuba to the Florida Keys. (If you’re just now learning about this, yes. You read that right.) She journeyed through 110 miles of treacherous, shark-filled, jellyfish-infested waters. She did it without any sort of cage to protect her from the dangers of the ocean. You think your dream is impossible? Tell that to Nyad.

Nyad, who is 64-years-old, began attempting her dream in 1978. She tried five times before completing the distance. The first four attempts were cut short due to jellyfish stings and asthma attacks, on top of the brutality of the Atlantic ocean. Nyad swam nonstop for 53 hours. That’s more than two days of straight swimming! Still think your goal is impossible?

She was interviewed as she climbed out of the water. She said, “I have three messages. One is we should never, ever give up. Two is you never are too old to chase your dreams. Three is it looks like a solitary sport, but it’s a team.”

If you’re doubting yourself, think of Nyad. Find a group of friends that will encourage you along the way and push you toward your dreams. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something! Reach for the stars, and don’t let anything pull you back down.
