October is one of the best months of the year. Leaves begin to change, football season is in full swing, and the ladies can finally wear oversized sweaters and riding boots once again! On a more serious note, October is special to certain individuals because of the events that take place. I bet you knew that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but did you know that it’s also Domestic Violence Awareness Month?          Â
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health movement organized by major breast cancer charities/facilities every October. This movement is used to increase the awareness of breast cancer and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure. The operation to increase awareness about breast cancer also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. There are several events that take place throughout the month of October to honor the health movement. The National Race for the Cure, Breast Cancer Today, and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure are examples of charity walks that fundraise for the fight. Even the NFL promotes Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
Domestic Violence Month is a national effort to encourage the awareness and prevention of domestic violence. In 1981, it began as the Day of Unity held by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. This day was intended to connect battered women advocates across the nation who was working to end violence against women and their children. There are several events that take place throughout the month of October to support Domestic Violence Awareness month as well.
At Wesleyan, clubs and organizations work hard each year to make sure that students are aware of these issues. Zeta Tau Alpha sorority supports breast cancer as their national philanthropy, and our Bobcat Volleyball team holds a Dig Pink volleyball game to support and honor breast cancer awareness. The Criminal Justice department works to promote Domestic Violence Awareness month. They will be passing out purple ribbons as well as selling t-shirts in the weeks to come. Each group works hard to fundraise throughout the year.
Don’t stand back and watch it happen; get involved! Be sure to wear pink and purple to support a loved one throughout the month of October!
