I’m late to the game, but that’s just how I roll!
The Power of Makeup Challenge was, more or less, popular a year or so ago, more or less, on YouTube. I always wanted to participate, but I didn’t have the outlet. I wrote a piece on another magazine channel discussing the question, “Can feminists wear makeup?” If you think about makeup a different way, it seems a little controversial. But I digress, because at this point, I just have fun doing it!
I don’t do well with selfies, but I tried to capture my work.
I am self-taught and a pro by no means. I don’t wear anywhere close to this amount in a given week. But, as to move onto the topic of the article, I still have a lot of makeup! Even better, it was free. I have three tips, so if you like makeup, savings and au naturale; stay tuned!
1.The Minimalist Approach
To save money on makeup, the minimalist approach is great! This isn’t to be confused with the “no makeup” makeup look, although it is very similar, but with a specific purpose. There is no foundation involved. My routine includes eyeliner and a light pink (lip colored) lipstick (I use Lovecraft by Kat Von D, but Naked by Urban Decay was my favorite for a while). Sometimes I use mascara and do my eyebrows, but this is your version of minimal, folks!
Less products equal more money in your pocket!
I do small things, like lining my lower lash line. I start at the outer corner, then stop in the center. I am not a fan of a harsh dark line, so I use a light brown, or smudge it. I think it makes my eyes bigger. I use makeup to accentuate my favorite features! If you have something you’d like to accentuate, I assure you there are plenty of YouTube tutorials out there!
2.Samples
In my senior year of high school, with the sale of prom tickets, the first hundred girls who bought one got a purse crammed with samples of high end products and multiples of each. I still have a lot of them left! If you can find samples, jump on them! Especially if you take the minimalist approach, some makeup can last a while!
3.Drug Store Products
If you care about makeup, but saving money is a priority, it’s best to do research on decent products that cost less! These fall under the category of “drug store products” because usually they are found at your friendly neighborhood CVS or Walgreens. These are my go to ways to find good products without having to buy and try them. Ask a friend for recommendations (I have a friend who is a makeup guru and I feel confident she could tell me the best products), or go to YouTube! Even if you have a problem, like oily eyelids, there is bound to be someone to give advice and review the product.
Let’s be honest, you probably won’t go your whole makeup career not buying at least one high end product (trust me, I haven’t). This is okay, but makeup isn’t my source of happiness. I enjoy it and my collection, but there are plenty of things I rather do then my makeup (like sleep, am I right ladies)! Make your own happiness, my collegiettes, and enjoy life!
