An Open Letter to the New Campus Correspondents of Her Campus WVWC

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Dear Brooke and Meg,

According to HerCampus.com, a Campus Correspondent is interested in a variety of media trades and is detail-oriented, a responsive communicator, an enthusiastic leader and passionate about all things HC.  When I think of these qualities, I couldn’t think of two better people to lead this chapter—and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to watch the two of you grow into the amazing women you are today.

As both of you know, being a CC is a lot of hard work. It takes patience, diligence, creativity and, above all, drive. There will be days when you feel overwhelmed, days when you wonder what the blankety-blank you’ve gotten yourself into.  Planning events, scheduling and leading meetings, editing, establishing partnerships, publicizing your chapter—this is just the bare minimum of what it takes to run a Her Campus chapter.

But what does it take to make your chapter great? It’s simple (and a bit cliché, really): all you have to do is care. I’m not just talking about “being responsible,” meeting weekly requirements or making Her Campus your top priority. All those things are great, and they’ll really help you in the long-run—but what will truly make your chapter great is caring about the individuals who make it what it is.

Her Campus is special for a number of reasons, but the members of your organization and the bond that they share is what makes HC unlike anything else. Think about everyone in your chapter and make a conscious effort to get to know them. Learn about their interests, what they’re involved in on campus, why they joined HC in the first place. Consider their contributions and how they’ve devoted their time to helping HC WVWC be the best it can possibly be.  And above all, strive to make each and every person feel included—because they are the heart of the team.

Having such an incredible team of writers, social media contributors, event planners and marketing geniuses is what made Her Campus the most memorable part of my college career. Knowing that I had the support of so many fabulous lady bosses almost instantly made any problem (a failed exam, a botched interview, you name it) seem manageable.

This organization helped me find my place, my voice and my people—and I know that it will do the same for both of you.

Again, I’m so incredibly proud of both of you, and I can’t wait to see what you do for this organization in the future. Yes, being a Campus Correspondent is a big responsibility—but it’s also one of the best things that will ever happen to you. My only wish is that this experience is just as rewarding and special for you as it was for me (if not more).

HCXO and congratulations,

Maty

Maty recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC), and she couldn’t be more excited to return to the Her Campus family as a member of the Community Team.  Maty’s passion for writing has guided her through most of her adult life, and it eventually brought her to to the Her Campus Chapter Network as a Style Blogger for Her Campus WVWC. Maty would go on to become Campus Correspondent of her chapter, as well as an intern for Her Campus National and a Chapter Advisor.  Through her different roles at HC, Maty quickly fell in love with the mission and purpose of the Her Campus Chapter Network—and in her new role, Maty has the rare and coveted opportunity to do what she loves on a daily basis by working with a growing network of 360+ college chapters.    When Maty isn’t at the office, she’s usually out exploring, cooking some random recipe she found on Pinterest, or cuddling with her adorable corgi, Winnie.  Follow Maty on Twitter and Instagram !
