Finals are almost over, and you’re ready to go home and lie on your couch for at least a week. The stress has almost entirely left your body until you look around and realize that your room is still completely filled with miscellaneous junk that you’ve collected up over the past year of dorm life. Luckily, there are some easy tips when getting ready to move out.
First, throw things away! Let’s be real, you’ll probably never actually read that People’s magazine your friend gave you. I know that I personally have a whole drawer dedicated to cards, old papers, quizzes, notes, programs, tickets, and much more. I’ll bet you have one of those drawers, too. Throwing out things that you’ll still have no space for over the summer is a great first step to truly tidying up your room.
Now, as a girl, I do not care that my dorm room closet is laughably small, but I still bring my whole wardrobe with me. This is great for fashion purposes, but not so much for moving out. So while many struggle with this (myself included), avoid the problem from the beginning and really only bring clothes you’ll actually wear. A few pairs of sweats, sure, but do you really need all fourteen pairs you’ve ever owned it your life? Same with hoodies – they’re big and bulky, and very difficult to pack up and bring home. Rule of thumb: only bring it if you know for a fact that you’ll wear it. If it’s an accidental “maybe,” leave it alone.
Finally, sell your books! If you’re a psychology major sitting on an Algebra textbook, it’s probably only taking up space. If you need to keep books for you major or, if you’re really particularly interested, by all means, keep them, but, for now, sell those suckers back, whether it be at Wesleyan or on Amazon.
Moving out can be really stressful, but it really doesn’t have to be! These are just a few simple hints to make getting out as easy as possible!
