Middle Part Hairstyles Return

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

We thought we’d left it in our middle school days, but we were wrong. It’s returning once again, emerging more fashionably and prominently upon the heads of celebrities, runway models and everyday girls than in previous years. We’re talking about the center part. Hairstyles, generally speaking, can make or break a particular outfit, and parting hair down the middle is one of the trickiest styles of all. If done incorrectly, one’s “It Girl” status can quickly drop to “Ragtag Misfit.” Several rules must be followed in order to achieve the perfect (but not too perfect) middle part.

1. Don’t part hair straight

Too straight of a part looks far too perfect. Instead of doing the work with a comb, leave the parting up to your hair. Start by brushing all hair completely back, then lightly running your fingers through it. This will create a natural part, one that probably isn’t 100 percent perfect. Whitney Port balances the uneven middle part with loose curls.

2. Know how and where to curl

When wearing your hair down, curl your newly parted hair away from your face. Allow the subtle curl to start at your eyes, cheekbones, or any other facial area where you’d like to draw most attention. Doing so will open up your face and add body to flat locks. Curling, even if only a small amount, will keep middle-parted hair from looking like you didn’t try. Amanda Seyfried, master of curls, worked this look at this year’s Golden Globes.

3. Ponies are essential

If your hair is naturally straight and doesn’t like to hold curl, opt to transition your middle part into a sleek ponytail. Arm yourself with a straightener, a straightening product and a hair tie, then begin to work your magic. The runway was graced with this new sort of do last fall at Jil Sander, transforming the average, everyday ponytail into something trendier.

4. Tuck

Ears weren’t only made for hearing! If you’ve tried all of the above and still can’t manage to get the look, try tucking the front strands of your hair behind your ears. Ears not only disguise limp tresses, but, in the case of Katie Holmes, they also take your hairstyle to the next level, adding just a bit of messy chic, no matter your look.

Although difficult, it is possible to master the middle part. With time, patience and the right styling tools, you, too, can up your do to va va voom.
