How to Make Your Own DIY Letters

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

One of the most basic DIY decorations is painted letter. Whether you’re spelling out your name, your monogram, or your sorority letters, it’s super simple. Not only do they make super fun decorations for your dorm, they also make the perfect, inexpensive yet thoughtful gift! Log into Pinterest, and you’re bound to come across endless cute wooden letters decorated with all sorts of patterns. Here is a little inspiration for your next crafting sesh!

Floral:

This is a lot easier than it looks, and you’ll impress everyone with your artistic abilities (even if you’re the least artistic person ever).

  1. Paint the entire letter a solid color of your choice (and don’t forget the sides)! I recommend using a light color to make painting the floral design easier.
  2. The way you want your flowers to look is up to you. For these I chose to do a rose. Be creative, and paint your favorite flower!
  3. If you want to recreate the flowers shown below, start off by painting a roundish shape. Then, using a different color, make little brush strokes starting in the middle and going around to the outside. There is no right or wrong way to do this. If you’re having trouble, practice on a separate sheet of paper to get them looking how you want them to!
  4. Add little green leaves coming off from a few of the flowers until you’re happy with the way it looks, and you’re all finished!

Glitter:

The hardest part of this is trying not to make a mess. If you’re anything like me, there’s no avoiding it. I suggest you do this one somewhere where it will be easy to cleanup.

  1. Start by painting your letter with whatever color glitter you’re using. For this, I painted the letter white.
  2. Cover the entire letter with Mod Podge, sprinkle glitter all over, then let dry. You can add another coat if you feel it’s needed.
  3. To help prevent glitter from falling off and getting everywhere for the rest of your life, carefully add another coat of Mod Podge mixed with water or a clear spray sealant on top!

Stripes:

There are multiple ways to accomplish the difficult task that is creating straight lines, however using masking tape to create a stencil is my preferred method. This technique also works well with more than just stripes. You can create any pattern or shape with the tape! Get creative with it!

  1. Paint the entire letter a color of your choice and let dry.
  2. When it is completely dry, begin making stripes with the masking tape, leaving gaps in between each stripe so that the base color shows through.
  3. Paint in-between the tape strips. The great part about the tape being there is that you can be messy with it, so there’s not a huge chance that you can mess it up.

Whether you need a new decoration for your dorm or a gift for your big, these letters are perfect for you. There are unlimited possibilities, and something for everyone’s style. Be creative and don’t get down if it doesn’t turn out just the way you like it. Sometimes they turn out even better when you just go with the flow and make them your own. Practice makes perfect!
