Campus Survival: Sorority Recruitment Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Yep, it’s that time of year again! For anyone that doesn’t know, it’s time for recruits and those interested in Greek Life to show their favorite sororities what they are made of!

Now, I may be a little biased here (being a recent member of Zeta Tau Alpha), but recruitment for me was one of the most fun (while still a bit stressful) experiences of my life.

I know that some girls may be stressing over these next few weeks: deciding what to wear, thinking of what to say, and which sorority they want to appeal most to. So, I’ve decided to draw from some of my own experiences to help out.

1. Relax. Many thoughts may be running through your head, like: “What if they don’t like me?” But trust me, the sisters are thinking the same thing. They are about as anxious to gain new sisters as you are to become one. Take a deep breath, and be yourself. They will love you no matter what.

2. Be professional but comfortable. When it comes to deciding what to wear, you may be asked to follow a certain dress code. Follow it as best you can while still being comfortable; you don’t want to be adjusting your outfit all night. Also remember, classy not trashy. Keep everything covered; you don’t need to show off the girls to get into a sorority.

3. Think about yourself. This may seem like an odd tip, but these girls will be asking a lot of questions about you. “What’s your major?” “What year are you?” and “What activities do you like?” are common conversation starters. Don’t answer with things like “I don’t know” It’s ok to brag a little because these girls want to know why you should be in a sorority!

4.      Ask questions. It’s important that you know what you’re getting in to. Don’t be afraid to talk to the girls about any questions or concerns you may have! Think of your questions beforehand so you don’t have to fill the silences with “Umm…”

5. Be confident. This may be a bit of a cliché, but confidence is really key. If you are confident in yourself, it will show through to the other girls. Don’t be shy! Show the girls the real you and your perfect sisters will find you.

Remember that Greek Life is an extremely competitive organization that will stay with you for the rest of your life. It will provide you with leadership opportunities and friendships that will last a lifetime. Recruitment time may seem a bit stressful at first, but when you look back on it, you will realize it is one of the best experiences of your college career. Now you’re just one step closer to joining the organization of your dreams!
