Campus Survival: 5 Ways to Reduce Stress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Finals are well on their way, and I’m sure many of us felt the end-of-the-semester slump this week. While you have been slacking, the work has piled up and you’re stressed again! Sound familiar? I thought so. I, like many of you, have procrastinated my way to pre-panic attack mode and need a good stress reliever. So, here are 5 fun ways to get rid of stress without taking up too much time!

1. Blow bubbles

I know it sounds silly for college students to go outside and blow bubbles, but it is proven to be among the best stress relievers! Blowing bubbles forces you to regulate your breathing and this allows for your stress levels to go down. It is also a lot of fun just to do out and watch the rainbow bubbles float around. So, go to the dollar store and pick up a bottle of bubbles!

2. Meditate

Take a few minutes to sit down and close your eyes. Say a positive mantra to yourself like “I am at peace” or “everything is well.” By allowing yourself to meditate you are bringing your mind back into the present and clearing your mind of all the clutter that takes us over every day. You will stand up refreshed and ready to take on the next challenge!

3. Warm up!

Put a heating pad or warm bean roll on the back of your neck, close your eyes and set a timer for 10 minutes. After the time is up take a tennis ball or use your fingers to roll out all the tension. By taking just a few minutes, you will get a nice little energy boost from allowing the muscles in your neck to stretch out.

4. Nap

I know, I know, it sounds counterproductive. Scientifically speaking, however, it has many benefits. By taking a short 15-20 minute nap, you give your body a little energy boost that will help with productivity. You also have a heightened sense of alertness. The optimal time to nap is between 2-4 p.m. and it has become a part of my daily routine!

5. Exercise!

Go to the gym and sweat it out. A good 10-minute run on the treadmill followed by some weight training and stretching allows endorphins to be released! Endorphins are “happy” chemicals in the brain and by going to the gym you are not only improving your mental wellbeing, but your physical health, as well!

The next time you are feeling stressed, try one of these techniques and find your niche. If you need more inspiration, go online and search ways to destress. There are thousands of ways; you just have to find the one that works for you. So keep your head held high and proud—you can do it! Finish out the semester strong, ladies!

Living life will only inspire your work.
