Build a Bridge and ACTUALLY Get Over It

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Breakups are hard, emotional, and messy. They leave you with a shattered heart and tearstained pillows. You also start to find an abnormal amount of chocolate, ice cream, tissues, and sad movies scattered around your house; you feel as if the world is against you and that you may never be happy again. You stalk your ex’s social media to see if they are just as miserable as you are. In many cases, they are off living their best lives—while you’re stuck combing through old selfies and wondering where things went wrong. Now is the time to build a new bridge and ACTUALLY get over it.

Climb out of those sweats you’ve been wearing for the past week, and throw on a killer outfit. Now is the time to get back out there and forget about the loser that doesn’t know what he/she is missing. It’s time to start moving on and getting back to your life. No more wallowing in self-pity and sadness. You have the control over your happiness— they don’t.

Grab your best friends, and go do whatever it is that makes you feel good and empowered. Maybe do something crazy! Chop off all of your locks, get a new tattoo, or go skydiving. Do something to show that jerk that you are better off without him and that your life is full and adventurous. Go live your best life.

Reconnect with family members that you haven’t seen in a while because you had been so preoccupied by your ex. Surround yourself with your family because they are your biggest supporters and will love you no matter what. These are the people that will never leave you and, though they may not always like you, will always love you.

Start dating again! It is time to get back out there and let people know you are on the market. It doesn’t have to be serious dating; it can be a casual date here and there. Remember this is the time to focus on you. The good thing about this is that if a date goes sour, you don’t have to pay for your dinner. It can even help you find what you are looking for in a significant other. Have fun with it; don’t stress about whether or not it goes somewhere or not.

Put your focus back into your career, and be the person that stands out from the crowd. Show your boss that you have what it takes to be there, and that you deserve that high-up promotion and annual Christmas bonus. Your work should make you feel empowered and accomplished. Let it build you up so high that you can’t see the haters down below. Coming home at the end of the day from a successful work day, knowing that you killed it all day, is a great feeling. You know, they say that money can’t buy you happiness, but looking at that new Kate Spade bag may just change your mind.

I know that now you may be hurting and feel as if the world is against you, but now is the time to get over your bridge and to the other side. Remember that you control your own happiness, and will come out stronger than ever before.

Until next time, HCXO!
