Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

A reminder that it is Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Breast cancer is the most common type of non-skin cancer in woman in the United States. The awareness for breast cancer is celebrated throughout the month of October. Breast cancer is the second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American Women. The most common form of breast cancer is ductal carcinoma. It begins in the cells of the ducts. Ductal Carcinoma begins in the lobes and is more often found in both breasts than are other types of breast cancer.

Some risk factors include estrogen, dense breast tissue, age at menstruation and first birth, taking hormones for symptoms of menopause, smoking, obesity, and not getting enough exercise. Men can also develop breast cancer, making up slightly less than 1 percent of those diagnosed each year.
