How many of you have clothes busting out of your closet and drawers? How many of you have 600 pairs of shoes? Face it, Collegiettes! We all have more clothes than we actually wear. If our clothes could talk, they’d take us to court and have us convicted for neglect.

At the same time, there are people on our streets in America who have been wearing the same clothes for the past six months. There are some children who have to wear the same clothes because their parents can’t or won’t supply them with clothes. There are people who have been looking to enjoy the warmth of the exact sweater you have in your dresser drawer – the one you’ll never wear.

The title of this article insinuates you’ll give away all your clothes, but it got you to look, right? You don’t have to give away all your clothes and start a nudist colony (unless that’s your thing, but you’ll probably have to relocate considering we kind of have guidelines about that stuff in our communities). All joking aside, this month’s chance to Better Your Life stems from giving. You’ll better your life by making someone else’s awesome!

If I’ve gotten you on board with giving away clothes (or maybe you’re still on the clothesline about it all), here are some things you can do with your extra clothes.

Give it to Goodwill

Goodwill takes clothes that people don’t wear anymore and then offers them at discounted prices so that people on a low budgets (like us) can buy without breaking the bank. Goodwill takes literally anything and sells it. This includes purses, shoes, ties, jackets, old formal dresses, shirts, pants and more. If your closet is overflowing, you could choose to give to this cause!

The Mission

Buckhannon doesn’t have a local Mission, but the closest one is in Clarksburg (approximately 40 minutes). The Mission takes clothes and sells them to people for very low prices. Oftentimes, shoppers can fill a whole bag for about a dollar! I took some old clothes of my family’s there awhile back, and I have some more to take over Spring Break. I prefer giving clothes here because I think it reaches a more direct need than Goodwill, and the location is usually closer to that greatest need. Around Buckhannon, we have The Salvation Army, and they have a thrift store as well!

The Clothes Closet

The Clothes Closet is just down the street, and they’re always accepting donations of clothes. They have limited hours during the week, so call or check in before you go dragging bundles of bags to their door!

The Hourglass

If you’re a girl on campus, chances are you have heard of or seen The Hourglass on Main Street. The Hourglass is a girl’s second-hand clothes store. I’ve been in there a couple times, and there is some super cute stuff! Better yet, they will actually buy your good-condition clothes during the first week of every month. This is a great idea if you’re looking to give away clothes and earn a little extra cash!

What Should You Give Away?

This article I saw on Pinterest touched on the subject of getting rid of old clothes. If you’re looking at something in your drawers or closet and you wouldn’t buy it if you saw it in the store, get rid of it. You probably haven’t worn it in months and that “special occasion” you’re waiting for is not going to come.

Give away:

  • “FAT CLOTHES”
When I say “fat clothes,” I don’t mean to give away your favorite pair of comfortable jeans or burn all your sweat pants and that big hoodie from your five-year relationship. What I mean here is to get rid of those clothes you’re saving “in case you ever gain weight and need them again”. Holding onto those clothes is giving you a safety net and an excuse to be lazy. If you give away those three-sizes-too-big clothes, you’ll work harder to make sure you can still fit in what you’re wearing now.
  • “SKINNY CLOTHES”
Nothing feels worse than holding onto clothes you used to wear in high school and can’t fit into now because you just need to lose “a couple inches off your waist”. We’re in college, young women, and our shape is changing. It’s unreasonable for you to try and fit into those hipless size-twos from ninth grade year. Stop getting depressed every time you go through that bag of clothes you used to wear before God gave you beautiful curves. You are beautiful, and it’s time you lived like it. Give away or sell those clothes, and go buy you some new clothes that make you feel great! If you feel great, you’ll look great!
