Your Guide to Eating in Morgantown

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

Morgantown may be best known for its party scene, but don’t sleep on Morgantown’s vast array of delicious food. Morgantown is a melting pot of cultures and its food scene best reflects that. From Asian cuisine to great BBQ, Morgantown has it all.  Here is your guide to the best food Morgantown has to offer.

Asian Cuisine

If you’re craving some pad thai or sushi but can’t seem to find any in the on-campus dining options offered, look no further. Chaang Thai on high street is a great place to have dinner or lunch with friends over a huge plate of pad thai. My favorite items to get are; chicken pad thai (4 level-spicy), potstickers and the pineapple fried rice.  Another great Thai place a bit closer to Evansdale is Ta-Khrai Thai Café. My favorite dishes are; sizzling chicken, crab Rangoon and drunken noodles. Lastly, we have my favorite Asian cuisine in Morgantown; Ogawa. Ogawa is a Japanese restaurant located near Towers, and it has the best lunch specials in Morgantown. The lunch boxes at Ogawa come with rice, shrimp tempura, salad, a California roll, miso soup and then your choice of anything Teriyak-ed or of sushi. It is a great bang for your buck, ranging from $10.95 – $15.95.

Date Spots/Family Visits

Being new to a college town can leave your head spinning on what dining options are available to you. Especially being a freshman, you don’t really need to dine off campus because you have prepaid meals on a meal plan. So where do you take your family when they come to visit you? Where do you go out on dates when you’re trying to impress someone? Well, Iron Horse Tavern is a great restaurant to bring both your family or a date! The menu varies from casual appetizers and sandwiches to more refined dinner items such as steak and pasta dishes. My favorites are; the honey-siracha wings, the soft beer pretzels and the build-your-own burger.  Table 9, is also another great option. It is located down in the wharf district with a great view of the Monongahela River. Table 9 is a bit more on the pricier side, but it’s totally worth it. My favorite menu items are; the chicken wings, lamb and the fried chicken and waffles. Both restaurants are great options for any time of the day, brunch, lunch and dinner!

Casual Dinner/Lunch

Tailpipes is another movie-esque restaurant that could’ve been in “Pulp Fiction.” They have burgers, fries and shakes that are all worthy of a page long review. My favorites are; the corvette, the classic fries with fry sauce and the s’more shake. Morgantown isn’t well known for having great pizza, but Pies & Pints is a game-changer. I like to think of myself as a pizza snob having grown up in NJ, so trust me I know good pizza. Pies & Pints offers full-sized specialty pies that combine unique flavors together. My favorites are; the Thai pizza (shrimp, coconut, thai curry sauce, etc.), Sriracha shrimp and Cuban pork!

Food & Drinks (especially drinks)

Before going out on the weekends, you may want to pregame your night with some dinner and drinks, these are the best spots to do so in Morgantown. Los Mariachis is the place students go before a night out. And while their fajitas, burritos and quesadillas are delicious, students are showing up for their drinks. Their grande margaritas and chavela are what bring the crowds in and will leave you ready for the night! Mario’s fishbowl is another Morgantown hotspot for the drinking crowd. Mario’s fishbowl is most famous for – you guessed it – their fishbowls.  These are frosty chalices full of your choice of poison, from beers to margaritas you can have it all (Fishbowl pictured below!). Roosters is another excellent choice for a place to stop in and have a drink. They have happy hour (51% off all beer, wine and liquor) on weekdays from 2 pm – 7 pm and on weekends from 9 pm to close. Plus, their wings are pretty great, so you really can’t go wrong!

Disclaimer: Please drink responsibly. WVU Her Campus does not condone or promote underage drinking, nor drinking and driving. Its 2019 get an uber y’all.

Below are some honorable mentions!

  • Big Shot Bob’s: new to Morgantown, but has phenomenal wings (hot honey is my fav)

  • Mountain State Brewing: they have a bit of everything you could want and great atmosphere

  • Primanti Bro’s: great sandwiches, but the drinks are killer and come with a rubber ducky
