When Your “Big” Isn’t So Big: Perks Of Having A Big The Same Age As You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

Joining a sorority provides tons of experiences and opportunities for anyone who becomes a sister. One of the most exciting parts of joining a sorority is getting a big sister. A big is the person you will always look up to and they will always be there for you when you need them, that’s their job. Most big sisters tend to be older than their little. The most common scenario is a big who is a sophomore and a little who is a freshman. However, some people like me might decide to not rush until their sophomore year and could then end up getting a big who is the same age.

That’s exactly what happened to me, I got a big sister who was my age. As I ran up to her with excitement all I could think about was, will this be weird? Calling someone who is the same age as me my big? Will it be weird for her to call me her little? It wasn’t and this is why having a big who is your age is actually a great thing.

1. You get to graduate together

2. You get to go through everything at the same time and actually help each other instead of her constantly being the one to help you

3. You get to do your senior bar crawl together

4. You have more in common since you are going through the same things at the same time and have consequentially turned into the same person

5. She isn’t your superior, she’s simply your best friend

6. You’re learning and achieving together, she’s always by your side

7. Your future little will basically have 2 bigs

8. You have a whole year more than most big’s and little’s have to spend together at school. That year will be filled with hundreds of big/little pictures, ice cream dates, formals and of course shopping trips. Cherish all the time you have together

9. You can always go out together because you’re the same age. It’s not like she’s 21 already going to all the big girl bars without you. You guys will get to go to those bars together

The day you get your big is the most exciting day for any girl in a sorority. It’s the day you meet your best friend, the girl who you will find yourself attached to for the next 3 or 4 years and even beyond that. This person will be your rock. Cherish your big and always remember to thank her for all she’s done and all she will do. Instead of being one step behind, your big will be beside you through it all. This experience will not make her your mentor; it will make her your best friend.

I am originally from Westchester, New York. I came to WVU for my undergrad in Strategic Communications with an emphasis on Public Relations and a minor in Sports Communication. My involvment on campus includes blogging for Her Campus, a sister of Alpha Phi, the assistant director of the media team on the Mountaineer Maniacs executive board and lastly, an athletic communications intern with the WVU Athletic Communications office. I will be graduating in May of 2017 and I am looking forward to getting started with my future career in Journalism and Public Relations!
I grew up in Charleston, West Virginia. Growing up here I knew there was a possibility of going to West Virginia University my entire life. Although I decided to start my college career at the University of Kentucky, those country roads led me back to WVU in the spring of my sophomore year. This was also the point when I decided to establish myself as a Broadcast Journalist student. Since this point I have strived to become the best possible journalist I can be. I am currently working as a weekend reporter for WDTV-Channel 5 in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Prior to receiving this position, I worked as an intern with WCHS-tv/FOX11, in the summer of 2014, where I learned critical editing, interviewing, writing, and speaking skills. I worked closely with anchors, reporters, editors, directors, producers, and even the web team. Aside from the television industry, I am the Campus Correspondent for the West Virginia University Chapter of the online entertainment magazine, Her Campus. Another position I currently hold is the Social Media Chair of WVU’s Radio Television Digital News Association Chapter. In the Fall of 2012, I became a sister of the Alpha Phi Fraternity, in which I held the position of ‘Big Sister Chairman.’ My other passions include horse back riding, scuba diving, being outdoors, and running. I am very adventurous and I try to stay well rounded. My goal in life is to live life to the fullest and be the best possible version of myself. My ultimate goal would be to earn a spot as a reporter/anchor for Fox News, New York. I plan to graduate in December of 2016 and look forward to my future.
