Poster in West Virginia State Capital Causes Uproar

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

A poster connecting Rep. Ilhan Omar to the 9/11 attacks was posted in the West Virginia State Capital building last Friday, March 1, 2019. The poster features an image of the Twin Towers burning on 9/11 with a caption that stated, “‘Never forget’ – You said.” Below this image, a photo showed Rep. Omar with the caption, “I am the proof – you have forgotten”.

This disturbing picture was included in a protest group’s display during a series of events for the legislature’s GOP day. The picture caused quite an altercation in the rotunda and soon spilled into the house chamber. Things got so out of hand that Delegate Mike Caputo (D) kicked a door out of anger and hurt the doorkeeper on the other side. He will be facing possible punishment for this action.

Many emotional speeches were made within the chamber during the evening session.

“We have to remember that our actions are supposed to be representing our districts back home, and that’s not how people want us to act,” said Republican Delegate Dianna Graves while voicing her opinion on the floor.

The floor sessions ended with Sergeant of Arms Anne Lieberman after she allegedly made an anti-Muslim remark.

“I am furious, and I don’t want to see her representing the people of this great state in the House again,” said Delegate Michael Angelucci regarding Lieberman’s remarks.

Omar also spoke out after the fact. “No wonder why I am on the ‘Hitlist’ of a domestic terrorist and ‘Assassinate Ilhan Omar’ is written on my local gas stations,” she wrote.
