I Got a Skincare Fridge and It Changed My Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

I love skincare. From face masks to serums to toners, I religiously use skincare products.

I came across Cooluli’s skincare fridge as I was scrolling through Instagram. While Instagram trends are not always trustworthy, I was intrigued. As an avid skincare lover, the thought of keeping my products cold in a mini-fridge was enough to consider myself sold — and I am so glad I got it.

Not only is the mini-fridge adorable, keeping your products cold can be super beneficial. Cooler temperatures help fight bacterial and fungal growth after you touch the products with your hands. Better yet, by keeping your skincare products cold, you can elongate shelf life. As for skin benefits, the cold helps reduce puffiness and redness.

If you think about it, keeping your skincare in a fridge makes a lot of sense. Bathrooms are full of bacteria — which is exactly where most people keep their products. Steam from the shower can heat your bathroom, and heat and skincare do not mix well. It can cause ingredients to oxidize, break down or even in some cases, melt. By keeping your items in a mini-fridge, you are protecting all of your products from these factors.

The best products to keep cold are serums, gels, lotions, eye creams and face masks. Vitamin C and retinoids break down and oxidize faster when they are exposed to heat or light. While your products will still work, they will not be working at their full potential when this occurs. Keeping products with natural or organic ingredients in the fridge will help them last longer because these products have fewer preservatives. Nail polish and perfume even benefit from staying cold. Nail polish is more likely to separate, and perfumes can lose their scent when they are stored at room temperature. Keeping lipstick cold in the summer will prevent it from melting in the heat.

While some products benefit from staying cold, others do not. Products that are oil-based, like serums or face oils, should not be kept cold because the cooler temperature can cause the oil and water ingredients to separate.

Even though the fridge is mini, I can fit a lot of products inside– four sheet masks, two toners, two face masks, moisturizer, gel, serum and a jade roller. I love that it is low energy, compact and (most importantly) quiet.

I have noticed that puffiness in my eyes and face have gone down tremendously after keeping my products cold. But honestly, nothing beats waking up in the morning and spritzing cold toner on my face, dotting cold eye cream under my eyes and running my cold jade roller across my face. Now that I have been spoiled with cold, refreshing products I don’t think I could ever go back to room temperature.

While you don’t necessarily need a skincare fridge to have a killer skincare routine, having one can make your skincare routine more enjoyable.
