College sports are more than just typical sports games. Not only have athletes from all over worked hard to get where they are now and play at a Division I level, but they ultimately bring people together. These sports go deeper than just football and basketball games. Both men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, gymnastics and more are all equally filled with pride, especially at West Virginia University. Just feeling the energy of the student section brings people a sense of belonging while all cheering for the same team. These games are great ways to meet others as well as make core memories, especially as a freshman. College athletics are not just about winning games, but forming a connection between students and their school.

When talking about college sports, most people’s minds go right to football. The large tailgates, filled stadiums and high energy from those on the field. Many game days involve a theme for the student section, like, for example, a whiteout. The theme unites the students as one, forming a strong community rather than different groups of friends. The atmosphere of a college game day can truly change people’s perspectives on the school. The collective chants and cheering make the game feel like a surreal experience. Often, students who happen to keep their distance from sports find themselves enjoying a football Saturday at their college. Fans strive to be in the stadium supporting their team.

Traditions are another aspect of college sports that brings the fans together. Colleges have traditions that have been passed down for decades. At West Virginia University, singing “Country Roads” after a win is a tradition for fans and students. It brings everyone in the stadium together, arms around each other, swaying back and forth. The students being able to participate in these traditions makes their experience in college more special. They feel connected to one another while bonding over their team.

College sports are a great opportunity for students to meet new people. Going to games with classmates or roommates gives students a chance to bond outside of the classroom. Attending college athletics is especially a great way for freshmen to come out of their shell and be a part of the community. By joining the student section, they can meet others and create new relationships with those in their school. These experiences that take place during college athletics can create bonds that last through college, and some even longer.

Game days can bring a whole community together. Fans of any age, new students, local families, professors and alumni all show up to support their team. Everyone wears clothes that represent their school, creating a sense of connection. One exciting game can rally up a whole stadium, area or field, making everyone feel excited and proud.

College sports go beyond what happens on the field. They give students exciting opportunities that involve students making new friends, participating in long-time traditions and feeling a sense of community. The excitement of these games makes the college ultimately feel like home. College athletics help build school spirit and provide a welcoming community for students to feel like they belong.
