Julius picked WVU after he received a scholarship opportunity. But throughout his years he says he grew to love the school for so many reasons. Julius is the president of I have Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc, Pi Mu Chapter, former chief of staff for Student Government Association, Student Ambassador for the Center for Black Culture and Research as well as the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Q: What made you want to run for Homecoming King or Queen?
My friends and mentors have pushed me and said that it would be a good idea for me to run. I kind of thought about it last minute and was really surprised to have made the court. I am proud to represent not only WVU on the court but also Philadelphia being my hometown. So to me running wasn’t just for me, but for all those that said I could and for those that think they can’t because of the way the look or dress or talk.
Q: Why do you think you would be a good King or Queen and why do you deserve this title?
I think I would be a good Homecoming King because I represent a lot more than the norm. Being of a diverse background, having been through hell and back, I have leaned and can relate to a lot of people. Being able to communicate with older individuals but still being able to relate to those amongst my own age allows me to be able to learn, teach and understand different viewpoints and sides. And to be honest, I can’t say why I deserve anything because anyone deserves something just as much as me. What I can say is that I have worked hard like other strived for greatness and will continue to do these things whether crowned or not. It’s just an honor to have the opportunity.
Q: What does WVU mean to you?
Originally from Philadelphia Pa I found myself at WVU due to scholarship and wanting to make a better me. When I got here I found more than that, I found another home. I found friends, family and people I love. I found a home away from my own. WVU has given me opportunity; guidance and a chance at better myself while still remaining true to who I am. So WVU means the a lot to me in all that this great State and University has done to help mold me into the person I am.
Q: What would it mean to you if you were named the 2015 Homecoming King or Queen?
To win 2015 Homecoming King it would be a tremendous honor. It would prove to everyone that truly anything is possible when you put your mind to it. Truly anything can be accomplished if you try at it. It’s amazing to me to be put down with the other amazing winners that have won before me and those future candidates that would win after. It would truly be a blessing!
Q: What are your connections to the state of West Virginia?
Before coming to WVU I didn’t have any connections with West Virginia. After coming to WVU I have made West Virginia a second home. It has grown to have a big place in my heart. I love my “Mountain Momma,” and I wouldn’t wish to be anywhere else right now. West Virginia has given me another family more friends, and loved ones and for that I am so appreciative.
Q: If you had one message for the students of WVU, what would that message be?
Follow your dreams and never let anyone tell you, you can’t do anything. This life is what you make it and no dream or aspiration is to high. Stay focused, learn, love and don’t forget to enjoy the little things. After all, you only get one life so make the best of it!
