At first, coming to college can be a very difficult time. It’s probably one of the first times you’re completely on your own; you probably aren’t use to having as much freedom as you’re about to. You might not even have any idea what it is you want to do with your life. With so many options for a major, the decision can be difficult.

At 18, how are you supposed to decide a career you want to pursue for the rest of your life? You don’t. It will change time after time, and that’s okay.

Now, this isn’t the case for everybody, but for most it is. If you’re one of those people, my advice for you is to go into college with an undecided major! Get some of your general courses out of the way, and if you have an idea of what you maybe want to do then maybe even take a couple of courses that have to do with that.

It’s okay to not have it figured out the second you get to college. Even if you think you want to do one thing and end up changing it once you get there, that’s ok!

I came into college having zero idea what I wanted to do with my life. I didn’t even understand what a major and minor was. So I went in with an undecided major and took general courses.

I ended up thinking I wanted to do business, marketing specifically, so I did. I figured why not, the business field usually has a bunch of job opportunities. I picked up a minor in journalism because it was something that always interested me, but I was too afraid of the job opportunities to major in it.

To make a long story short, my business major only lasted a semester and a half before I realized how much a lack of interest I had for business and how much love I had for my journalism classes.

After three semesters, I finally decided to change my major to Journalism and minor in business instead. It took me some time to figure it out, but I’m happy to say at least I finally figured it out.

So if you haven’t figured it out yet, don’t stress. It will all come to you eventually.

I am originally from Westchester, New York. I came to WVU for my undergrad in Strategic Communications with an emphasis on Public Relations and a minor in Sports Communication. My involvment on campus includes blogging for Her Campus, a sister of Alpha Phi, the assistant director of the media team on the Mountaineer Maniacs executive board and lastly, an athletic communications intern with the WVU Athletic Communications office. I will be graduating in May of 2017 and I am looking forward to getting started with my future career in Journalism and Public Relations!
