7 Reasons Having a Pet Makes Your Life Better

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

1. They can make your life longer! Studies have shown owning a cat can reduce a person’s chance of dying from heart disease and make them 30 percent less likely to suffer from a heart attack. Although no other animals have shown this research, we can guess they all help.

2. Feeling blue lately? Studies have found that dog owners are less likely to suffer from depression compared to people without pets. Another great reason to adopt a furry friend…. Or two.

3. Playing with a dog or cat can raise your serotonin and dopamine levels, so you’ll be much more calm and relaxed. Even after a bad day, your pets will make you feel better.

4. Any animal can be your pet… within reason. Please don’t try to make a wild animal your pet. But, I know I’ve mentioned dogs and cats a lot, and they are amazing, but lots of animals can make you happy! From rats, to snakes, to guinea pigs, they will all love you. And even pets like those can be in animal shelters! Go adopt, not shop.

5. THEY LOVE YOU UNCONDITIONALLY! Your pet loves you more than it loves itself. Unless you have a cat… they love themselves a lot. Seriously though, no matter how much a person loves you, they will never wiggle their butt and jump up and down when you walk through the door.

6. Pets are entertaining. Each one has something unique about them, usually it will make you laugh. Dogs, cats, and birds are known to have the most quirky personalities, so if you want to be loved and entertained keep them in mind!

7. Have trouble waking up? No problem, pets are personal alarm clocks. They’ll be sure to wake you up in time for the sunrise, and to let them outside.

I'm Chelsea, and I attend West Virginia University! I plan to major in strategic communications with an emphasis in public relations. I'm a lover of dogs, books, food, and Netflix. “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer." - Albert Camus
I am originally from Westchester, New York. I came to WVU for my undergrad in Strategic Communications with an emphasis on Public Relations and a minor in Sports Communication. My involvment on campus includes blogging for Her Campus, a sister of Alpha Phi, the assistant director of the media team on the Mountaineer Maniacs executive board and lastly, an athletic communications intern with the WVU Athletic Communications office. I will be graduating in May of 2017 and I am looking forward to getting started with my future career in Journalism and Public Relations!
