As 2026 begins, we all set our New Year’s resolutions, and often those include vows made to improve our health. But with all the gym ads ramping up, the meal prepping that suddenly isn’t attainable to do, and the fitness classes starting again, it can be overwhelming to try and pick one. This simplified guide offers feasible options, taking all of the pressure off!Â
1. Get Outside!
A little Vitamin D will do wonders for you. Grab a friend, a roommate or even just a pair of headphones and a good playlist, and get out of your room! Morgantown’s Rail Trail has some beautiful woodsy views to take a pleasant stroll down, or if that’s too slow for you, stop by Morgantown Adventure Outfitters and rent a bicycle to take down the flat path.Â
2. Set a Screen Time Limit!
We’ll admit it, we’re guilty of being on our phones too much, too. But the more time you spend doomscrolling, the worse you’re going to feel! If there’s a social media app you use way too often, set a daily limit for it. When you’re not distracted by your mutual friend’s Instagram story, there’s more time to do something you love.Â
3. Pick Up a New Hobby!
Any kind of outlet or relief from stress is so important! Something you can pick up and turn your mind off for a while is crucial to have as the semester begins, and things pile up. If you’re an artsy person, maybe consider learning to knit or crochet. If fiber arts aren’t your thing, journaling or scrapbooking are options too.Â
4. Cut Out Some Fast Food!
This one’s a little more difficult, but we believe in you! While a McDonald’s or Taco Bell run can sound amazing after a long day, try to keep the fast food intake down to once or twice a week. You might be surprised how much better you feel!
5. Stay Hydrated!
On the same note, make sure that you’re keeping up with your daily water intake. Cute colored water bottles like Owalas are great motivators to stay hydrated. Maybe even decorate it with some stickers to make you want to carry it around. Definitely still treat yourself here and there, nothing can replace a morning coffee!
6. Fix Your Sleep Schedule!
Those late nights can be tempting to stay up watching TikTok, or binging a show you hadn’t had the time to catch the latest season of, but a good night’s rest helps you start the next day on a fresh foot! Nobody says you have to get up at the crack of dawn, but try to rise before midday. You may find you’re more productive!
7. Eat Breakfast!
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day! If you go into your classes with low blood sugar and are hungry, you’re less likely to be focused and successful. Some fruits in the morning can do well for brain function, like a banana, some strawberries or oranges. If you have time, pair them with a waffle or two, or for some protein, eggs!
8. Spend Time With People!
Isolation is out, and sidequests are in! Being around people can boost your mood tremendously, even if it’s just a chill hangout with your friends! Plan a girls’ night, whether that’s in or out, go grab dinner, or make a trip to Morgantown Mall together. Be around people who improve your day!
9. Don’t Procrastinate!
Sure, that final project can wait til the end of the semester to be done, but don’t put that stress on yourself. Start those big papers now, finish those little homework assignments due over the weekend, and get ahead early! Doing hard things now will make it easier on you in the future, and you’ll be grateful in the long run.Â
10. Take Care of Your Mind!
In the whirlwind of things that one has to get done, don’t forget to take time to prioritize yourself. A healthy body and schedule can’t function without a healthy mind! Never be ashamed to take a self-care day, whether that means doing nothing or doing everything you don’t normally get the chance to.Â
A healthy 2026 starts with a healthy you, so set yourself up for success!
