Christine Blasey Ford’s Impact on the Brett Kavanaugh Confirmation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WSU chapter.

As many of you know, Christine Blasey Ford has had a huge impact of the confirmation hearing of Brett Kavanaugh. She came forward with sexual assault allegations against him and has been consistent with her accusations. On Thursday September 27, Dr. Ford testified in front of the 11 members of the Senate committee. During her time, she was asked questions by all 11 of the members which consisted of 5 Democrats and 6 Republicans. She was asked about the night this happened as well as what happened after, how she has been since, why she came forward, etc..

During the summer of 1982, while she was still in high school, she was assaulted by Brett Kavanaugh at a small get together with a couple other people. After that experience, Dr. Ford has had many issues including a decrease in her grades at school, anxiety, claustrophobia, and PTSD like symptoms. These have still affected her throughout her life and they continue today. In a 2012 remodel of her home, Dr. Ford and her husband disagreed on something. It wasn’t colors or carpets, it was whether or not they should have two front doors. Dr. Ford wanted to have a second front door and when her husband asked why, she began to tell him everything. She told her husband for the first time that she had been assaulted. She told him where it happened and when. She told him how it happened and what happened. Most importantly, she mentioned who did it. She mentioned the man who has caused her so much pain throughout her life and how it still has affected her today. That man was Brett Kavanaugh.

During the attack, Dr. Ford also remembered another person in the room named Mark Judge, who was a friend of Kavanaugh’s. He was a bystander of the incident and was laughing at the expense of her pain and suffering. He has not been contacted yet about the testimony but Dr. Ford hopes that he will be contacted during the FBI investigation.

Trying to prove herself, she took and passed a polygraph test which questioned her about the assault. She has also been hoping for a full FBI Investigation into the matter. She was allowed a week for the FBI to investigate Brett Kavanaugh and the allegations of sexual assault against him by Dr. Ford and at least two other women. Before Brett Kavanaugh can be confirmed, the FBI has a week to conduct their investigation. As of Monday October 1, Dr. Ford has not yet been contacted by the FBI for the investigation.

While there is still a week for the decision to be made, Christine Blasey Ford shared her story which is all that needs to be asked of survivors of sexual assault. Her bravery and courage gave voices to others who have been to scared to share their assaults with anyone. RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network), reported a 338% increase in calls to their hotlines between the hearing and Sunday from people telling their stories of sexual assault. Dr. Ford’s testimony is the direct cause of these people speaking up for themselves.

Her impact of victims of sexual assault is huge and will be forever remembered.
