Throwback Rom-Coms to Watch During Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

Spring break is here, which means most of us are taking road trips with friends and unwinding in the sun! If you’re like me, you”ll be cuddled up in bed all week re-watching some of the most iconic romantic comedies!

(500) Days of Summer (2009)

To start off my list of some of the best rom-coms, let’s begin with a not so romantic rom-com. (500) Days of Summer stars Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Tom, played by Gordon-Levitt, is a greeting card writer who meets Summer, played by Deschanel, as they develop a unique relationship. In Tom’s eyes, Summer is the perfect girl. They get to know each other fast and Tom believes he has developed an amazing, romantic relationship with Summer. However, things are not going the way he thought. After being dumped, Tom deeply reflects on the last 500 days he spent with Summer to see if he can pinpoint exactly what changed in their relationship.

(500) Days of Summer can be watched on many streaming platforms including Hulu and Prime Video.

Sixteen Candles (1984)

This 1984 coming-of-age movie stars The Breakfast Club actress Molly Ringwald as she celebrates her not-so-sweet sixteenth. Sixteen Candles follows Samantha as she is about to celebrate her sixteenth birthday with a crush on the most popular guy in school. To top it off, with all the excitement coming from her sister’s upcoming wedding, her family forgets her special day! While suffering huge embarrassment along the way, we follow Samantha on her journey to young womanhood and young love.

Sixteen Candles is a total 80s gem featuring some absurdly funny humor from back in the day. Check it out on Hulu and other streaming networks!

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

10 Things I Hate About You Julia Stiles Heath Ledger
Touchstone Pictures

10 Things I Hate About You has to be near the top of my list for one of the best movies of the 90s/early 2000s. The movie starts out with new student at Padua High, Cameron. Cameron meets Bianca, a sophomore who he soon learns is not allowed to date. Bianca’s father will only allow her to date if her older sister Kat is also dating, but how can Cameron pursue Bianca without finding someone for Kat? Then comes Patrick Verona, mysterious bad boy who is chosen as Kat’s new potential lover. The rest of the movie follows Kat, Bianca, Cameron and Patrick as they navigate this new love conflict. Will Patrick win Kat’s heart? Or will everything go south…

She’s All That (1999)

This 1999 film follows high school jock, Zack Siler, who makes a bet with his friends that he can turn the less popular, unattractive girl into the school’s prom queen. Zack’s plan could either totally work in Laney’s favor, or totally blow up in his face. Zack has some major explaining to do once Laney finds out his plan. Or, maybe Zack’s intentions are not as evil as they seem after all.

She’s All That can be found on multiple streaming networks. The movie stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook.

Valentine’s Day (2010)

Valentine’s Day follows three different LA-based couples on one single important day- Valentine’s Day. Each couple has a different story, but all of them are spiraling. It’s up to Cupid to figure out whether these couples are worth fighting for. The movie follows the story of a TV reporter who is assigned to find romance in LA, a quarterback who is second-guessing his future, two strangers who make a connection on a plane, an old couple of grandparents suddenly facing a crisis, and more. The entire movie is revolved around one single day, giving these couples until midnight to figure out if their love is worth it or not.

Valentine’s Day stars many well-known actors such as Julia Roberts, Jamie Foxx, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Taylor Lautner, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Garner, Queen Latifah, Ashton Kutcher and more.
