Strange Holidays of September 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

Hey, guys and gals. It’s a new school year and the beginning of a new month. Hello, September! I hope everyone is doing well and getting settled into their new classes. It seems things are only getting more and more stressful as we inch into the fall semester. But fear not; if you need something to make you laugh or brighten your day a bit, we’ve compiled another list of wacky holidays! Without further ado, lets begin.

1 – Emma M. Nutt Day
I know what you’re thinking – What an awful start to September! But Emma M. Nutt is actually a pretty cool chick (despite how lame her name is). She was actually the first woman to become a telephone operator. Though machines have since replaced the job, it was still a huge leap for technology and for women.

2 – Labor Day
The first Monday of the month is Labor day. This national holiday is quite popular. Typically, it signals the end of the summer vacation, but it’s actually a celebration of work hailing all the way back to the 1880’s. So kick back, relax, and be thankful that today you don’t have to work.

3 – Skyscraper Day
Skyscrapers were a huge advancement in architecture. They made it possible to house people on less ground space. If it weren’t for skyscrapers, cities wouldn’t look nearly as large as they do. And, you wouldn’t have those pretty sky-scapes to look at.

4 – Newspaper Carrier Day
Extree, extree, read all about it! Newspaper carriers often were under-represented throughout the years. Typically they consisted of elder kids and young teens, and back in the day, they were responsible for bringing you all your news. Things may have changed, but there’s still nothing quite like reading a newspaper. So thanks to all you newspaper carriers!

5 – Be Late for Something Day
As a self-proclaimed professional procrastinator, this is a great excuse for me to be late. Unfortunately, I don’t think my 8AM professor would agree. So be late for something, just maybe not class.

6 – Fight Procrastination Day
Ironically the day after Be Late for Something Day is Fight Procrastination Day. Priceless, I’d say. This one is pretty straightforward; don’t procrastinate! (But if you do feel like procrastinating, today is also Read a Book Day!)

7 – Neither Rain Nor Snow Day
Neither Rain nor Snow day is an example of those typical slogans that say the show will go on. So give a good thanks to your postal workers, because neither rain nor snow (nor heat nor gloom of night) will slow them down.

8 – Grandparents’ Day
Grandparents’ Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. If you ask me, it seems like a good day to sit down and appreciate the hardships that your grandparents went through to raise your parents and then help them raise you. (For something a little less crazy, it’s also International Literacy Day.)

9 – Teddy Bear Day
Teddy Bears are the best friend any kid or college student could ask for. My teddy bear has been used and abused (lovingly, of course). Take some time out of the day and appreciate that little stuffed critter. He’s been around a lot for you.

10 – Sewing Machine Day
And the holiday gods are at it again. They don’t fail to make me laugh. The day after Teddy Bear Day is Sewing Machine Day. If you took it a little too hard on the 9th, make sure you have your sewing machine handy today. If you don’t, you’ll be stuck sewing by hand. Boy, does that take forever!

11 – 9/11 Remembrance
9/11 is one of those days that you’ll always remember. I was sitting in my 3rd grade classroom, and the teachers were being all hush-hush. I didn’t know what happened until my mom came to get me during lunch. Remember the 3,000 fallen and over 6,000 injured. We are a nation held together by patriotism; we just needed a tragedy to remind us of that.

11 – Make Your Bed Day
This one has me a little bummed out. Make Your Bed Day… guess that means I can’t just leave it a mess. Good thing every day isn’t Make Your Bed Day.

12 – National Video Games Day
National Video Games Day!? I have to say, this one’s got me super excited. I can’t wait to sit around on Thursday and just hang out and play video games. To put the cherry on top, it’s also Chocolate Milkshake Day. Talk about two of my favorite things all rolled into one day.

13 – Blame Someone Else Day
Considering it’s the first Friday 13th of the year, there are a ton of holidays for this day. It’s also Defy Superstition Day, Fortune Cookie Day, Positive Thinking Day, Uncle Sam Day, and National Peanut Day.

14 – National Cream-Filled Donut Day
If you like cream-filled donuts, then this day is for you. Unfortunately, I doubt any of the local donut shops are giving away any. It wouldn’t hurt to look around, though; they might!

15 – National Women’s Friendship Day
On the third Sunday of September, it’s National Women’s Friendship Day! Spend time with your friends reading Her Campus or doing other fun activities. Celebrate your fellow women!

16 – National Play Doh Day
What better day to release some stress and act like a kid? Play Doh Day will definitely appeal to those that are stressed with their first exams coming up soon. Just grab some Play Doh and play around with it. Get creative!

17 – National Apple Dumpling Day
So flaky and delicious. On the 17th, you definitely need to pick up an apple dumpling from somewhere. Even better, you could make some from scratch. Celebrate good fall food just in time for fall to begin on the 22nd.

18 – World Water Monitoring Day
On September 18th, try to get educated about your water. That beautiful liquid has many factors that make it healthy, but there are also some things in it that might make it harmful. Look up your water quality to find out about the water in your area!

19 – International Talk Like A Pirate Day
‘Ey matey! I don’t know how serious you want to take this, but I commend anyone that walks around campus and actually talks like a pirate. You’ve got some serious guts; maybe even enough to walk the plank.

20 – National Punch Day
Not the “pow!” sort of punch, but punch as in the drink. Perhaps you might have a small get together. It is Friday! No shame in putting a punch bowl on the table. It makes everything classier.

21 – International Peace Day
It’s time to channel your inner activist hippie. September 21st is International Peace Day. That means if someone cuts you off, be nice and don’t curse them out. Spread the love, man.

22 – Business Women’s Day
Business Women Day holds a place on this list of bizarre holidays for the very reason that 3 Harvard business students founded Her Campus. Now, they’re empowering, beautiful role models. You go, girls!

23 – Dog in Politics Day
Strangely enough, Dog in Politics Day started back in 1952 when President Richard Nixon gave a speech and mentioned his daughters getting a new dog and naming it “Checkers.” (Coincidently, it’s also Checkers Day too!)

24 – National Cherries Jubilee Day
Cherries and ice cream all rolled into one dessert. Who wouldn’t want to celebrate that?

25 – National Comic Book Day
Not to be confused with National Free Comic Book Day in May, National Comic Book Day is meant to spread the amazing work of comic book writers, artists, colorists, and editors everywhere. So sit back, relax, and go grab a comic. You might find that you come to love them.

26 – Johnny Appleseed Day
Party on Johnny Appleseed Day with some of your friends. This day is meant to pay tribute to the real man, Johnny Chapman. He is known for planting many apples trees in New York and Pennsylvania among other places.

27 – Crush a Can Day
Don’t ask us why the 27th is crush a can day. Just do it. Get that soda can and crush it! Stomp on it and take your anger out. You’ll even help save room in the recycling bin if you do!

28 – Ask a Stupid Question Day
This one is pretty self-explanatory. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and ask a silly question. It’s only for one day, and at least you have an excuse!

29 – Confucius Day
Try your luck. Go play the lottery or something. (But if you don’t win, we’re not responsible!) Good luck and have fun!

30 – National Mud Pack Day
Go get your mud facials, ladies! The last day of the month! It’s been a long and stressful one. October is right around the corner, and that means midterms. Keep yourself rejuvenated.

That’s all for September! See you next month for another round of odd holidays – October edition!
