7 Movies to See This Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

This time of year is always the best time to spend with the people we love. As the weather gets colder, we get more and more excited to cuddle up with our SOs and check out the latest hot show on Netflix (Orange is the New Black, anyone?) But sometimes we can get tired of sitting inside, watching that same old reality show. So next time you get a little bored with the view from your couch, grab your girls, plan a date with your SO, or even drag your mom to the one place that never gets old: the movies. Grab some popcorn, a soda, and your favorite candy to munch on and make sure you check out our top 7 movies to see this fall. (P.S check out the trailers for each movie by clicking on the movie titles.)

1. Gone Girl

Release Date: October 3, 2014

Starring: Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike

Fandango Review: 4 ½ stars

It’s Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth year anniversary. On that day, Nick comes home to find glass on his living room floor — and his wife missing. Suddenly, Nick finds himself in the midst of a missing persons case, having to provide information to the police so that they can help find his wife. Yet, Nick feels like a suspect when interrogated, and his strange actions throughout the investigation make him extremely suspicious. This mysterious thriller is now playing in theaters and has already gained a huge fan base. Of course, it helps that Nick Dunne is portrayed by none other than Ben Affleck, one of the hottest actors on the scene right now. Based on the bestselling novel Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, this movie will blow your mind, give you goosebumps, and make you consider how well you know the people that surround you.

2. Ouija

Release Date: October 24, 2014

Starring: Olivia Cooke and Daren Kagasoff

Fandango Review: 3 ½ stars

After the strange death of their friend Debbie, Laine and her friends still feel like there is a way they can communicate with her. When they discover the Ouija board, they awaken their deepest and darkest fears. Suddenly, spirits from “the dark side” are communicating with them. They keep telling themselves “it’s just a game,” but they can’t deny the scary and twisted things that start happening to them. Will they finally put an end to the torture, accept Debbie’s death, and move on from the “game?” This suspense-filled spine-chiller premiered right in time for Halloween, but you can still catch it in a theater near you! PS: it’s a perfect date movie; your SO will be right there next to you to hug you when you get scared.

3. The Book of Life

Release Date: October 17, 2014

Starring: Diego Luna, Channing Tatum, and Zoë Saldana

Fandango Review: 5 stars

This cute animated film highlights El Dia de Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead). Two best friends are in love with the same girl, and when one of them comes close to finally having her, the other sabotages his chances by sending him to “The Land of the Remembered.” While there, he goes on an incredible adventure to see the woman he loves again. This is the perfect movie to take your little siblings or cousins to see. And who knows, you may enjoy it as much as they do!

4. The Best of Me

Release Date: October 17, 2014

Starring: Michelle Monaghan and James Marsden

Fandango Review: 4 ½ stars

From bestselling author Nicholas Sparks comes a modern take on the romantic storyline of The Notebook. In The Best of Me, Dawson and Amanda fall in love as teenagers. Then Dawson makes a bad choice, and twenty years pass before the two see each other again. But once they reconnect, as adults older and wiser than before, they discover that the love they had for each other never changed. In true Nicholas Sparks fashion, this movie portrays the love story every girl dreams to have. This beautiful couple’s journey is one that you can enjoy with your mom, or your girls, and maybe even drag your SO to see. They may think it’s just a chick flick, but the message behind the movie can be inspirational to all couples.

5. The Equalizer

Release Date: September 26, 2014

Starring: Denzel Washington and Chloë Grace Moretz

Fandango Review: 5 Stars

For all you action movie fans, this one is for you. Denzel Washington (one of my faves) is at it again in this fast-paced, adventure-filled movie. Washington plays the hero, becoming a person he said he would never be again, to save a young girl from the Russian Mafia. This one, collegiettes, your boys will love, and you will too. The power that Washington portrays to save this girl’s life is entertaining and admirable, to say the least. This movie will have you hooked from the beginning.

6. The Hunger Games: MockingJay, Part 1

Release Date: November 21, 2014

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson

Fandango Review: 5 stars

The third installment in The Hunger Games movie franchise brings on a plot unlike the others. Now that District 12 is destroyed, Katniss Everdeen has become the MockingJay for District 13; she is the District’s weapon against the Capital. But now, the Capital has Peeta, the man she loves, as their weapon, and they are brainwashing him in any way they can. Katniss — with the help of her best friend, Gale; her mentor, Haymitch; and the people in power in District 13 — must now go to war with the Capital to finally bring peace to the Districts. But it’s not that easy…Based on the third book in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, the first part in the MockingJay movie series will have you wanting to read the books again, and finding that the 2nd part (releasing in 2015) is way too far away.

7. Interstellar

Release Date: November 7, 2014

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain

Fandango Review: 4 ½ stars

This sci-fi flick is about Cooper, a man on a mission with his team to conquer the solar system, on a voyage like no other. He is leaving his children behind to complete the task, telling them that he is coming back. But this voyage is risky, and what they discover on the journey could change the universe. With the support from his team, Cooper remembers that love trumps all, even the mission, and with this in mind he is able to find a way to make it all work. For those of you who love adventure and a couple planets and stars to go with it – this one is for you.

So collegiettes, you’ve got a variety of movies to choose from. Hopefully you get a chance to check them all out – and if you do, comment below and let us know which ones you loved! Happy fall, and happy movie-watching! HCXO.
