7 FAN-tastic Group Halloween Costume Ideas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

This is the week of Halloween, collegiettes, which means it’s time to get those costumes ready! Although it’s been years since you and your buds have left trick-or-treating behind (right?), there’s nothing stopping you from all still dressing as a group. And what better way to do it than with these 7 FAN-tastic costume ideas straight from this month’s Geek Speak feature!

1. Doctor Who

If you’re searching for a last-minute group costume, look no further than the Doctor! In an ever-expanding universe (literally!), there are plenty of characters – your group can have as many or as few as you want. There are companions, villains, allies, and, of course, various incarnations of the Doctor. The Dalek and TARDIS dresses in the picture (plus costume dresses for each of the three previous Doctors) can be purchased at Hot Topic, if you’re looking for something simple and chic. (We love the idea of archenemy costumes!) If you’re looking to dress up as the Doctor, you’ve got options galore – 12 of them (well, 12 and 1/2)! The Eleventh Doc requires a white button down shirt, a bow-tie, and red suspenders. For the Ninth Doctor, rock a purple V-neck and a leather jacket! The possibilities are limitless!

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Everybody’s favorite anthropomorphic mutated reptiles are also the perfect setup for a four-person group costume, and since their summer blockbuster was a surprise box office smash, they’ll be pretty cool this Halloween. Get matching green bodycon or tank dresses (don’t forget to decorate the front with some killer muscles!), black leggings, and strips of fabric in brown and each of the four colors: orange for Michelango, red for Raphael, blue for Leonardo, and purple for Donatello. Decorate as preferred – no toxic waste required. Then go rock that party as turtles in a half-shell. Cowabunga, collegiettes!

3. The Avengers

Everybody’s favorite superheroes are always en-vogue for Halloween (which is nice because you can snag some last-minute hero digs at Party City). If you’re looking for inspiration rather than a costume, you can throw together a Black Widow stealth cosplay with black jeans/leggings, black boots, and her signature red hourglass logo on a black top. Geeky companies like SuperHeroStuff and WeLoveFine also offer costume tank dresses ranging from Iron Man to Captain Marvel. However your Avengers assemble, you’re bound to look super-chic this Halloween.

4. Batman’s Enemies

We’re getting a new look at some famous Batman villains on Gotham this fall, but that doesn’t mean we can’t stick to the classics for Halloween! With arguably the best villains in the DC comics universe, Batman’s enemies are instantly recognizable – whether your costume is detailed or simple. Gather up your friends and hit up that Halloween dance as Poison Ivy, Riddler, Penguin, Two-Face, Harley Quinn, and, of course, the Joker. Feel free to add in a Batsy and Robin for good measure. You can make your own costumes or take the store-bought route. Either way, you’ll look downright criminal.

5. Disney characters

Just because you were Cinderella five years in a row when you were a kid doesn’t mean the Disney princess costume idea can’t come back in a chic way! You and your friends can dress-up – literally – as Disney’s full princess roster. Whether you prefer full-length gowns, bodycon skirts, or tulle tutus, any girl can rock the Disney look and feel like royalty for the whole night. And if the princesses just aren’t your style (or if you’ve got some princes in your group), Disney’s got a wide range of adorable animal sidekicks to choose from – go as the various fish from Finding Nemo or the puppies from 101 Dalmatians!

6. The Simpsons

Having celebrated its record-breaking run on TV, The Simpsons had a mega-marathon that went for 12 days straight. You’ll be totally hip if you dress up as the famous family with your groupies this Halloween. The costumes are so simple, too! Wear yellow undershirts – or go really bold and paint yourselves yellow – bright, bright yellow – and rock their crazy hairstyles. Take a cue from this snazzy family and wear cartoonish eyes to tie your costumes together! D’Oh!

7. Star Wars

With new rumors cropping up every day about the seventh installment in the sci-fi franchise, Star Wars is crazy popular (again). You and your group can get with the craze and dress as the gang! Han Solo requires a white shirt, black vest, blue pants, and black boots. Princess Leia needs a white dress and, of course, her famous hair buns! Convince one friend to wear a Chewbacca hoodie, like this one from Hot Topic, and another to wear a cute Boba Fett dress, and you’ll be sure to cause some ruckus in the Mos Eisley Cantina!
