6 Ways to Avoid a Hangover

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

Drinking on campus is common thing. If you dorm, it’s part of the college experience to go to parties or have a few drinks with your dorm mates. But with nights of heavy drinking will inevitably come the dreaded hangover. Of course, the only surefire way to prevent a hangover is to not to drink at all. But if you choose to take a shot or two with the ladies, here are a few tips that can prevent you from spending the rest of night with your head in the toilet. Yuck!

  1. Before you start the festivities, eat something. Drinking on an empty stomach will lead to disaster since the alcohol will affect you much faster. This is one of the main causes of hangovers. The best thing to eat is something fatty and with carbs, like a pizza, to help slow down the process of your body absorbing alcohol.
  1. Drink water; stay hydrated. Alcohol can lead to dehydration which will make the tissue around your brain shrink. This causes pressure and gives you those massive headaches the morning after. Try drinking a glass of water per each alcohol drink.
  1. Stick to light liquor. Darker drinks contain a high volume of congeners (chemicals used for color and flavor), and it is said that this chemical leads to hangovers. You may want to stick to lighter liquors just in case, even though any color alcoholic drink can still lead to the headaches the next day.

  1. “Liquor before beer, never fear. Beer before liquor, never sicker.” This is just a saying, but there may be some truth to it. Remember, though, it is not the order of the drinks but rather the amount that you have that is important.
  1. Take your time when drinking. Your liver breaks down alcohol at the rate of one beer per hour. So spread out your drinks throughout the night, and you won’t end up passed out at the bar or on your friend’s bathroom floor.
  1. After an awesome night of drinking and dancing, right before bed have a drink of water and take some vitamin B. Do not take any headache medicine (Aspirin, Tylenol, Motrin, etc.). You don’t want to mix any drugs with the alcohol in your system; you could seriously damage your liver.
